Yep, giving it a shot for winter use. I heard many here say that vehicle spec'd for 5w30 could use 5w20 with no probs. I thought I'd give it a shot for 7k oci. But I'll definitely stick with 5W30 in future to be safe (since I have pan and engine heater now for the severe weather 5w30 may be overkill )

I never had oil consumption with 5w20; always at the same level (5000 oci w/ '06 F150 5.4l MC5w20).
I've used the 50 wht since I bought it at 52K. It just hit 79.

First run of the PP with the strong detergents may be cleaning the rings up where the heavier oil doidn't spend alot of time. The 5w20 travels in and out of the rings much better cooling the ring pack and carrying away contaminants. A life of 50wt may have starved the upper ring and carbon may have collected there. as the carbon is now being lubricted it is breaking up causing more oil to break to the top ring temporarily. AS the carbon deposits are reduced the consumption should subside.
Continue with Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 and the truck will run better in the long run. 15w50 has no place in a low tension ring pack.It won't even see the top ring. Carbonbabulous!
Good info thx. I did a low mile cheap conventional oil ocis with MMO which seemed to do some cleaning as well as gunk flush during the oil change.
