That's right, cold water on a hot engine and things could crack. If not metal, much of the hard plastic, like tubes and electrical connectors could crack.
Best thing is to take a cold/cool engine, cover the ECU and perhaps coil packs/ignition with a plastic bag, spray with degreaser of choice, let sit, rinse. Then drive the car so that everything evaporates. In northern climates I wouldn't do this in the winter. A nice hot summer day is the best. Been following this recipe for years with multiple cars and never had a problem (Rendezvous, Contour, Cutlass, Altima).
