Buick Rendezvous Engine/Air Filter Change Pictures

I changed out the engine filter today on my Rendezvous with a Purolator PureOne PA24880 Filter. I was going to change out the cabin filter too but then I found out they sold me the wrong size at AAP. So I couldn't change it but I do have pictures. They sold me a C25246 and I needed a C15471.

Here are the Bosch Carbon Cabin filters (in 15,000 miles) compared to the new Purolator Breathe Easy Filters. Also btw Autozone installed them upside down so the carbon is on the other side):

So now I have to stop at AAP tomorrow after work and see if they will let me swap out cabin filters now, since they sold me the wrong ones. I put the old ones back in for now.
 
I suggest cleaning your engine bay of any and all lose dirt. Take it down while at operating temp to the nearest pressure wash location and hose down the car while it's off, covering the typical things from water you'd want to protect like the dizzy, alternator etc. I bet it wouldn't get as dirty as fast unless you are just in a really dusty area.
 
For some reasons the cabin filter is almost always dirtier than engine air filter. Honda and MB have shorter mileage for cabin filters than engine filters.

I would agree. Good filter, though, obviously.

Is your air box clean when you install the new filters, cabin and intake? It seems like some of the dirt/dust would have to be coming from inside the engine bay with that much, but it is possible especially if your intake start under the wheel well, but I can't quite tell with just these pics. It's amazing that much dirt is in your area.
 
That's interesting, the tips of the pleats are by far the dirtiest. I think that means most of the dirt is being captured by impact on the media ridges, before getting to the flat sides of the pleats. Inside the pleats, on the flat filtering surfaces, it isn't so dirty. I think most filters I have changed have been more uniform in the dirt distribution than this. I wonder if the oil wetted media has this effect, stops the dirt in it's tracks so to speak, There is an outline of dirt on the ridges also, like where the inlet is.

Thinking about this I would have to say the filter looks dirty at 15k because mainly the tips are looking dirty, but the main body of the filter is far from used up.
 
Autozone helps people install cabin air filters?

The cabin air filter definitely looks dirty. But the engine air filter appears that it just has loose dirt, and if you tapped it gently, you can probably reuse it for much longer.
 
Well went to AAP today to get the correct fiter for the Buick. Interesting that cabin filter is under for that car even though it doesn't fit. The Purolator C15471 has been discontinued. They looked up what they had in stock and all they had was a Driveworks DW-15471. They look pretty nice, also looks like there is carbon in them too. The Purolators I bought were $24.99, these were $41.99. When the manager that was there seen that, he said "whoa, that's the best I can do that's all we have, oh wait a second", then he gave me a 20% manager discount and gave them to me for only $9.20. All this even without my receipt! I love the workers at my local AAP they are always so nice and informative.

Yikes, what slimjim said! Give that engine a good detailing after you get your filters back in.
What the heck happened to the old filter? Please tell me the filter got all mangled like that from you removing it and it wasn't like that the whole time. If the filter was sitting like that in the air box, it must have been passing dirty air.
The pureones are nice filters though! I have been experimenting with pureone and napa gold air filters. Tough to tell which one I like better at this point.

Yeah the edges got that way from pulling it out. That's why I posted the crazy insane position the filter is in. We were able to get the box out a little better to put the new one and get it properly aligned. I couldn't remember how we did it before so I just ripped the filter out.
 
That is a tricky spot for an air filter eh?

I think though, that filter could have gone another 5k+. It's got a nice cake on the tip-top of the pleats but the rest of the media still looks pretty good! JMHO

Is that a PureOne you replaced as well?

I just replaced my 04 Rendezvous air filter. It has to be the worst located air filter I've ever dealt with. I think I took as long getting the thing installed as I've done tune-ups on other cars.

I especially love who changing the air filter requires you to mess with MAF and another air sensor and vacuum tubing.

I know it is a huge pain! It took over an hour the first time I did it!

I wouldn't suggest doing it when the engine is at operating temperature. Cold water on a hot engine isn't a good idea. I always back our vehicles out onto the driveway and spray the engine bay down when the engine is cold and hasn't been running.

Why, though?
 
I've read that the extreme temperature differences from a hot engine and cold water creates a risk of cracking the block. Maybe I drank the Kool-Aid?
