Ok so 2 months ago (on a Saturday) I put a p/s pump on my boss' sons 95 Camry. Everything hunky-dorey, looked up the fluid spec on our mitchel computer and it recomends Dexron II. So in it goes. Finished up at 2pm, test drove, all is fine. Boss gets home with it at 3, sees 'red' fluid in reservoir, but it's 'too late now', so nothing is said to me ....until today.

He reminds me that I put the pump on and that I put trans fluid in it. Being 2 months a go I say 'no I didn't it's a p/s pump and unless someone told me diffrent I put p/s fluid in it.'(forgot I really did put trans in it)

Anyway, he goes on telling me that the pump is leaking and the rack is now wasted b/c I put trans fluid in it. He's now making it out to be my fault that I put the correct fluid in there when the past 3 years he's been putting p/s fluid in it.

Sorry this is so long....wife got to hear the longer verson if that helps. Now to the question.

Has any one run in to a mixing problem like this? Where trans and p/s made seals leak?

I have always used trans fluid, put "power steering fluid" in my old mustang once, it all leaked out, topped off as it leaked with trans fluid and it barely leaks at all.

None of my other vehicles have really leaked out much.

if this was two months ago. it's possible if he was driving around with a bad power steering pump. the rack was on the way out. it just took two months to go out. Unless you put the pump in correctly. I've used "power steering fluid" before with no leaks. Then two years ago, I saw in a haynes manual that dexron 2 is recommended. Dexron 2 doesn't exist anymore. I went with redline dexron 4..no leaks in power steering reservoir. this on a 92 mitsubishi

I was looking up Manual Tranny fluid for my '94 tercel yesterday, and I happened to notice that the owners manual says use Dexron II for PS fluid. Have him check his owners manual.

Just go back and make a copy off of your computer program that said Dexron II, then tell him to kiss you @ss.

My 95 Landcruiser with 136K miles on it, cleaned out old fluid and put in what the manual said. PS fluid. It started leaking within a couple of months. Just sucked some out and added so PS stop leak and it quit leaking. I think the seals go bad when the fluid is mixed. Sounds like you did the right thing and your boss did the wrong thing. Don't do him anymore favors.

Found out the hard way, dont work on computers or cars for people you work for or for girlfriends.

After you touch them, anything that goes out after that is your fault!

You could have changed a headlight bulb, then they have a waterpump go out, the waterpump is your fault....

I'm with Dan. I too learned the hard way. No more favors for friends. This includes fixing tvs and plumbing.

I only work on cars in the family. Even then I sometimes have a squabble with family over my repairs.

I quit working on family cars too. After giving me a ton of grief and my parents laying on guilt trips, I did stuff like replace timing belts for them. Only to have them trade in the car the next day!

It's one thing to fix someone's car so they can get to work. It's quite another to fix it for free just so they can drive it to the dealer lot

they may have wanted you to do it so they get more money on the trade in value if timing belt is done. It's most likely the only reason

bigred, The cap for the resovoir should say DEX II or Dex III right on it! I have never seen a Toyota that used powersteering fluid! I am not saying that thei ris not a Toyota that does not use powersteering fluid only that I have not seen one yet. Now my family has been buying Toyotas since 1971 so I have seen a lot of Toyotas!

Have him look at the owners manual. My 1986 4Runner,2003 Camry,Dads 95 Tacoma and Moms 03 Tundra all use Dex II or Dex III. I have even gone so far as to run a quart of Marvels Mystery Oil in the 4Runner for several years with no problems. I want to say it was like 5 years with MMO in it after I fixed a line on a trail. When the pump failed at close to 16 years of age I put a junkyard pump on it and it is still leak free!!

Do not go off half cocked. Get your information straigth and show him that it takes Dex!

John, Yeah I've shown him the owners man, print out from our computer and all. He's just being a stick in the mud/ole' timer and acting like I'm an idiot.

I fill a bit sorry for you. I hate working around people that are not self actualized!!! If reality is to tough and it is always someone elses fualt then maybe a drug induced stupor would work better for him! What is the matter with men today???????
