I had a customer ask me about new car warrantees he likes mobil one and when he brang it to the dealer they said we will only use our oil and refused to put it in they said he may have warrantee problems..
I said to him that sounds like a lie...It was mobil 1 5w20 he had..Anyone care to comment?

My car says 5w30 "SM" on the cap.

I brought 5 qts of 15w-40 Rotella to the dealer to use while I was still under warranty.

No questions.

It just totally depends on the dealer. GM and Ford dealers seem to be the hardest to get to change w/ your own oil. Honda has never given me a problem in the past as long as it was the right weight. I'm suprized JRed's Subaru dealer allowed that much of a deviation in spec.

I bring my own oil to my Subaru dealer. No questions. But I started a year ago after finding this site and started using synthetics but all standard 5w30 spec.

I just did that on Friday. Brought two gallons of Valvoline SynPower 5w30 to the Nissan dealer for them to change the oil for me.

I had a coupon for a $24.95 oil change, but since they credited me for bringing in my own oil, I paid $12.95+ tax/disposal.

For most cars, the manufacturer is probably most concerned about whether or not you changed it on time.

It has a lot to do with your dealer, I'm sure.

When I didn't have the facilities to do my changes myself I went to a local Midas shop. They used my oil & filter, didn't care if I watched, or checked a few things while the car was on the lift, and only charged me $10 for the labor.

No matter where you go though. Always watch them put your oil in. When I worked at a dealer I saw a ton of guys put the customers oil under their bench and then put the bulk stuff in. I have a conscience though, I couldn't do that.

Sometimes I goto my local Pep Boys to do the oil change. They charge $18. I can't knock that when I'm in a hurry, and my bad back won't allow me to do it myself. I buy oil in smaller bulk by the case and get filters to match the number of quarts I buy.
I don't have to worry about the mess in the driveway (mine is on an incline, and not good for oil changing)
I don't have to worry about disposal.
I give a local shop business.
While it rubs me the wrong way at times, having done this since I was 15, m over it now and just enjoy the end result.
Giving my own parts means I know what I get, and the car is happy too

Not really a deviation at all.
The Subaru OM has a temp/visc chart that allows the use of just about any grade SL or SM you might have on hand, depending upon ambient temperature.
Subaru even allows the use of 20W-50 or straight 30 or 40 under "severe" conditions, a term open to interpretation.

I always bring my own oil (usually M1 5W30 for my Outback, and M1 5W20 for the Miata). Never had a problem.

I used to bring my own oil to the dealership for an oil change, but I didn't get much of a price break by bringing in my own oil.

After that I started doing my own changes, but I am no longer able to, so now I go to a local lube place that charges half of what the dealer charges.

I have done that, but I cannot see them from where we wait, I live in NY and I do not want to go through them giving me containers back etc. So I have a local do it and I am right there. I will never trust a stealer so why bother????

crazyoildude,

I bring my own to the dealership an found no issues from Chrysler.... not even any warranty problems at all. I beleive they just wanted/need my money.

I cannot see any grounds for not honoring the waranty if you provide them with a oil that meets the specifications listed for your vehicle.
Unless they provide the oil for FREE, they have to back it up.
If the oil does not meet the specifications listed for your vehicle, I can see them making a fuss about using it.....as they should.
Of course, there are places out there that are difficult to deal with.....in which case, you should take your business elswhere because there are good, honest, shops out there that would love to have your business.

Some employees at dealerships are profoundly uninformed about much of anything. If the oil he brought is of the viscosity and Service Category (or newer) according to his owner's manual, he's good. The fools at the stealership need to be told to shut up.
