I will be heading off to college soon which will mean a big change in my lifestyle. I will no longer be able to change my truck's oil anytime I feel like it. Breaks and a handful of weekends will be my only chances to change my oil since I do not think the school would appreciate me changing my oil in the dorm parking lot. Because of this change, I have decided to experiment a little with synthetics and longer OCIs. Instead of using my old favorite - dino Havoline - I filled the truck with Mobil 1 full synthetic Truck & SUV oil today. On the jug it says the oil will perform well though the manufacturers maximum OCI - in my case 5K. Will it probably be able to go longer than that, or should I look at M1 EP? 5K seems like a short OCI for full syn. If I can, I plan on getting a UOA done at 5K. Does my plan sound like a good one?

This is my truck's first real taste of synthetic. Prior to this it only ever got dino or blends and the oil was always changed every 3K or sooner (though I can't speak for the previous two owners there). Currently the truck has no leaks (with 75K on the odo), and I hope it will stay that way or be something Auto RX can fix if they do develop. So far it seems to be doing well with the oil. It seems to be running a little quieter than it did on dino.

BTW - the truck is a 2001 Ford Ranger with a 2.5L four cylinder. It sees a lot of stop and go driving and higher RPM (5K...redline is a little over 6K).

Also, there are plenty of shops where I am going to school, but I most likely will not take the truck to any of them. Too many shops have managed to either damage the truck or not do basic maintenence correctly in the past for me to trust them. Only one shop ever touches it, and they are at home, not near my school. That is why I need longer OCIs.

Don't worry. You will find plenty of upper class and graduate students that will let you change your oil at their place. It's time to get your hands dirty. Good luck in college!

Use regular M1, a PureOne or Amsoil filter, and do 10K. NO problem! Check the oil, make sure it's topped off, and you just aren't going to have a problem with it. Run the EP if you're convinced it's different, but I haven't seen any VOA comparing TODAY'S EP to TODAY'S standard-issue Mobil1.

It has been mentioned that EP is re-labeled M1, and the way they change formulations without forewarning, who knows if it's worth the extra bucks? A dollar shot of VSOT and/or CD2 SLOB might raise M1 SuoerSyn BEYOND the additive level of EP anyway.

Where ya going to school, Ranger?

I will be going to UNC Charlotte...and I can't wait! I will miss my garage though, lol.

I wasn't convinced that the EP was worth another $7 at the store today...looks like I was probably right. The Truck & SUV oil was the same price as regular M1, so I went with it. It can't do any harm...

Nope, that's another UNC...UNC Chapel Hill. I actually live only about 3 miles or so from UNC Chapel Hill, but I didn't really want to go there. A ton of people from my high school are going there though.

Know the difference between a Carolina girl and a catfish, right?

One has whiskers and smells bad. The other lives at the bottom of a river.

(Sorry, I did time at State for awhile.)
