Today I was in Wal-Mart and I bought some Supertech 5w30. Its almost time for an OCI and I wanted to try it again. I used it a long time ago in my wifes old Explorer with no issues.
After doing some research and hanging around this board for awhile, I figured it was an acceptable oil at a decent price point.
So back to the oldest question about this oil....who makes it. I've heard its QS, PZ, Mobil, WPP, and all kinds of other suppliers. I realize it may have a different add pack then the name branded ones.
So.....who makes this stuff. I'm located in Virginia Beach. The bottle is blue and is not exactly rectangular. It has more of a sloping shoulder design from the pour cap. There are a series of somewhat legible dot matrix numbers on it. I seem to make out P10/08. I take that could be a date of mfg. The bottom did not say wpp, just a series of 3 "C"'s within eachother.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks

The Supertech, here in Texas, is made by Quaker State. I used the number on the bottle to determine the actual manufacturer.

The information, on the bottle, is the following:

HLPY451681 02228

Using that number, I was able to determine who made it for Walmart.

Please excuse my misstatement regarding Quaker State. Supertech is made by Pennzoil, here in Texas. The HLPY indicates that it is made by Pennzoil. I have a bottle of Pennzoil Platinum and the letters begin: HLPY, which is the same as Supertech here, the other numbers after it indicate which machine operator bottled it, time, and the date it was made comes after the first set of letters and numbers. Example 45 is the operators' machine number, and lot number of oil, 1681 is the time it was bottled, military time, and 02228 is the date it was bottled February 22, 2008. Quaker State and Pennzoil merged together, and then were bought out by Shell Oil. That is how I know using the Pennzoil Platinum bottle I have in my stock. When Pennzoil bottles for private label brands, they use a different set of numbers for that private label, that way they know that the oil was made for Walmart, or for whomever is the private label.

Pennzoil uses the following (Straight off of their bottle)

HLPY 464100 062408 1207, in this case 464 is the operators' machine number, 100 is the lot number, 062408 means it was made on June 24, 2008 at 1207 pm.

I used to work for Frito-Lay as an Inventory Control and Purchasing Manager, and using certain numbers, in sequence would tell us the plant where it was produced, the PMO,(operator of the machine)the number of the machine, time and date of when it was packaged.

Then when private label was used, we would go to a shorter numbering system, like Pennzoil, so that we would know which private label product was involved by the letters and numbers.

Please know that I could not correct the other post regarding a so-called misstatement. I looked at a bottle of Quaker State Higher Mileage 5w30 with Slick 50 that I have, and it has the same letters and 3 same first numbers. Supertech is made by the same plant that makes Quaker State and Pennzoil, here in Texas. The HLPY indicates that it is made by Quaker State/Pennzoil. I have a bottle of Pennzoil Platinum and the letters begin: HLPY, which is the same as Supertech here, the other numbers after it indicate which machine operator bottled it, time, and the date it was made comes after the first set of letters and numbers. Quaker State's Higher Mileage Slick 50 bottle letters and numbers are:

HLPY464597 062808 0716

So, that indicates, to me, that Quaker State/Pennzoil, and Walmart Supertech were produced at the same refinery/plant.

HLPY must be the refinery/plant 464 is the operators' machine number, and 597 is the lot number of the oil made June 28, 2008 at 7:16 am.

FWIW, My best friend runs all of his vehicles (2 hondas, 1 toyota and 1 nissan) on nothing but supertech oils & filters. He has gone over 200k on several and to 300k on a Chevy blazer. He never changes oil himself and has all done at WalMart. He has never had an engine lubrication issue or failure with ST oils.

I've heard two other people claim that Quaker State makes Wal Mart's oil but they didn't provide any proof. If you look on WM's page you will see msds for Warren, Exxon/Mobil, and Shell. Since Shell owns QS it would make sense.

Shell (usually in Texas), Exxon-Mobil or WPP make the supertech dino....in the northeast it is Exxon-Mobil. WPP is the only one who makes the synthetic.

If it looks like the Exxon jug, then it is probably Mobil Clean 5000 in the supertech jug. However, for 50c more, just go for the Mobil Clean 5000 and you will know what you got.

QuakerState does not exist as a seperate entity anymore. It is a brand bottled by SOPUS.

I, too, have posted on the local Supertech being bottled by SOPUS based on bottle markings and similarties. I used it for a couple of years in my 02 CR-V for around 5-6k mile intervals. I had a peak inside the valve cover today and except for a couple of nooks and crannies, the internals look brand new.

There needs to be a definitive thread on this issue that's stickied. I've seen probably 5 threads on this in the past month. Kind of like the Oil Filters section has 'who makes what filter' stickied, this one needs 'who makes what store brand oil'

Here in Texas, WPP does not make the Full Synthetic Supertech. Pennzoil/Quaker State does the bottling. I have proof based upon the Pennzoil and Quaker State bottles I have on my shelf along with the Supertech 5w30 Full Synthetic bottle I have on my shelf. WPP does not bottle it here in Texas...Period...

Let me clarify my initial posting related to Pennzoil and that is that I was using the Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic Bottle letters and numbers straight from the bottle. Also, I was using the letters and numbers off of the Higher Mileage Quaker State bottle with Slick 50, then I used the letters and numbers from Walmarts' Supertech Full Synthetic bottle. All were 5w30. So my statement that here in Texas, Quaker State/Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic, and Supertech Full Synthetic are accurate. WPP does not make Supertech Full Synthetic here in Texas. Shell Oil now owns both Quaker State and Pennzoil brands.

I beleive that the blue bottle that you are describing is the bottle from XOM(Exxon/Mobil). It slopes downward from the top of the cap. Next time your in W*M, check this blue bottle with the red bottle of Exxon SuperFlo(if the Exxon is sold in that store). The blue ST bottle should be the same style bottle as the Exxon red bottle.

In my area, the ST oil comes from a variety of suppliers ie: WPP, XOM, SOPUS and maybe others. Each bottle has it's own distictive style or stamping on the bottom. Not everyone can read into these markings, myself included. I'am though, familier with the XOM(Exxon/Mobil) round shouldered style bottle as I see it in a variety of places, for example...When I drive the the Toyota dealership for some Toyota T-IV ATF, it is made by XOM and comes in that same style round shouldered bottle only in black.

I noticed the similarity when I used to use MC 5000 5w30.

I'll have to take a look at the bottles of Murray's/OReilly's next time I go now that I know some what to look for. thanks.
