Bought a new Tundra

Very nice truck! I am considering the same.

I am going to be the odd man out here and seriously question the relationship between engine failure and supposed debris. I believe it is a possible lack of oil flow, related to operating the engine with 4 PSI of oil pressure under low RPM, modest load conditions, which (at least in some cases) damages the front main bearing before anything else.

One press quote: "Toyota has not yet determined the fix for the engine debris" seems to indicate that simply introducing a cleaning step won't fix the issue. And as of last month, Toyota itself says: "Toyota is currently developing a remedy for this problem".

To me, one big clue that it's not debris, is that the main bearing spins and STICKS to the crankshaft. Debris typically wipes out a bearing and destroys it. Lack of adequate lubrication typically overheats a bearing and causes it to extrude some "fines" stick to the crankshaft and spin. The two forms of failure are often very different.

I am in the market for a new truck and am looking at the Tundra. If I do choose a Tundra, I will make sure to have adequate factory warranty coverage and would likely purchase an extended policy. Along with choosing the highest quality oil and frequent changes. Today, Ford uses rubber oil pump belts, GM and Ram still have lifter issues, Nissan is a has-been and it seems almost every choice has some risk. The one engine that seems robust is Ford's 3.5EB, but having owned one, I would prefer anything else due to sound and feel as mine sounded like a UPS truck, groaning when under high load on long trips.
Never heard of 4 psi.
My variable pumps jump from 30 psi to 75 psi with throttle position.

I had my old '63 Chevy stepside out this morning and I parked it next to my new Tundra. The side by side contrast of progress in the last 60 years is pretty amazing.

Great side-by-side pic, Ausfahrt!

As nice as your new Tundra is, I’d take the Chevy!

Since you posted the pic of the Chevy, It’s not going too off-topic to ask you to tell us a little bit about it, i.e., what’s the mileage on it, when did you acquire it, how often do you drive it, etc.

drtyler,

Thanks for the link!!

If I am originating a thread on a topic I will generally perform a search before I post.

However, since Ausfahrt’s Tundra post was a new post and his Chevy post originated in 2022, I would have not made the connection.

I’m looking forward to reading his post!

I remembered that post about the neat old Chevy truck. Thought it was a few months ago but it was from ‘22.

I see that @drtyler linked the thread from when I bought the old chevy two years ago. I don't really drive it much, under 1000 miles a year in the summer just tooling around on Vermont's back roads. I had considered a front disc brake conversion but it would lead to other complications like 5-lug hubs on the discs and then I would still have 6-lug drums on the back so I ended up just leaving it stock.

The truck has an older restoration from the early 2000's and it's good but not great although it still looks pretty good from 20 feet away. I have no idea whether the indicated 98,000 miles is accurate or not but I doubt it. The original 230 was swapped out with a 250 at some point and it's just an old farm truck that is about as basic as you can get with the straight six, three on the tree, drum brakes and armstrong steering but I love it.

Nice truck ! Took delivery of mine on the 18th of July. The package you purchased is new to me. What all does the SX package consist of? Looks like a nice package...

SX Package: Stylish Profile
The new SX Package is available exclusively on SR5 grades in 4×2 or 4×4. It is offered on Double Cab models with 6.5-foot bed and CrewMax models with the 5.5-foot bed. In all cases, it dresses up the Tundra with bold styling thanks to Dark Gray Metallic 18-inch wheels and by substituting black for body-color trim, including outer door handles and the rear inboard bumper. The Tundra door badges are removed for a minimalist look, while the 4×4 badge on the tailgate gets blacked out (on applicable 4×4 models). Similar treatment can be found inside the cabin, as black accents replace smoked silver for the trim.

Thanks for the response, got the options I wanted but had to deal with having chrome badges. Very pleased with my Tundra so far.

I'm happy to hear that you like your Tundra and I love mine too. I'm not a big fan of the current blacked out look craze but it seems to work with my red truck.

Good to hear that you're happy with the Tundra too, what did you buy?

When I first bought my 2020 Tundra I was excited to do some mods and then I realized everyone and their mom do the exact same mods. Lift, black rims, larger tires, etc. I saw five second-generation Tundras that all looked the same as far as mods on the same day once. So I decided to keep it stock to be different. That said, the blacked-out look with the red is stunning.
