Bought a new to me 08 Tundra Double cab 4x4 that I mentioned in another thread. I really like this truck. It has a real good ride to it, plenty of power, and very comfortable seats. Probably not going to miss my old truck much. I will be taking it on it's first trip here in 2-3 weeks to Florida and I will be pulling my trailer with the Camaro on it. I may be trading it to a boat! I will give an update on how it does on a long haul. Oil and filter will be changed before the trip. Probably change the differential fluid as well front/rear and the transfer case fluid.

Toyota has stopped selling these trucks because of the gas pedal problems. Call your local dealer to get your's checked.

My buddy was looking at some last week [they looked real nice] but the only problem was the arrogance at every Toyota dealer we went to in Broward and Miami-Dade...We also looked at their service department...They were all filthy and looked like they had not been cleaned for years.

I finally talked hIm out of it and he bought a Ford 150 with the 4.6.

BTW good luck with your truck.

Is this a 5.7 V-8 Tundra, or a 4.7 V8?

What oil are you planning on putting in it?

Like others have said, be careful with the whole 'gas pedal' thing. Maybe have it checked before you go......

It's the 5.7.

The guy I bought it from has been using 5W30 Castrol Edge and changing it every 5000 miles. Not sure what filter he used? I am going to use Valvoline Synpower 5W30 with an K&N filter. I like the K&N cartrigde style filter better. Not much higher than a Fram and looks well made. I will change every 5000 miles or every 6 months, whichever comes first.

I'm not worried about the gas pedal recall, I don't go to the dealership for anything, service or to buy a new vehicle. The whole recall thing sounds rediculous to me.

I love how everyone always has such a negative opinion on dealerships, and that thery are so much smarter than factory trained technicians. Truth is that there are some people out there that give dealers a bad rep, but there are alot of times when people spend a lot of money and time trying to fix problems and there is a lot of things that they are missing or just not looking for certain things. One benefit is the ability for a dealer tech to recognize or diagnose problems because they see the same vehicles every day, and have resources not available to the general public or independent repair shops.

So let me get this straight. You'd rather put your, and your families lives at risk, from a massive defect, because you don't like dealerships? This is a well documented problem, people have DIED from this, and there are more reports of problems coming in weekly. I'd swallow your hate and take it to a good dealership so they can fix it, rather than risk the possibility fo it getting stuck wide open, towing a trailer. That wouldn't be pretty.

I really did not expect a post like this from you.

I don't understand that reasoning. why wouldn't you check to see if your vehicle is affected?

johnny, I understand that viewpoint, but many people have had different experiences. when I was in sales at a saturn store, I was into saturns and got to know about the common issues w/ them. but talking to the 'factory trained techs' they were clueless about it. you could ask them about oil consumption issues (every saturn S series owner is familiar w/ that) and they would look at you like its the first they've heard of it.
part of our sales spiel was to show customers the shop, because people are impressed w/ a clean shop. just like a restaurant is nicer if it has clean bathrooms. so I don't fault anyone for not liking a dealer w/ a dirty shop.

JMO, But if Toyota has ceased selling these vehicles there must be a clear and present danger of the throttle sticking. The recall is going to cost big dollars not even to mention lost sales and maybe lost market share. Give Toyota credit with dealing with this issue. Please have your truck checked out. When we all think things never can happen to us then the snake bites us in the you know what.

I understand about being hesitant to go to a dealership for a lot of things, like maintenance and repair.

But we are talking about a severe safety defect these vehicles have, so bad that Toyota has stopped PRODUCTION of many models b/c of it. Not just stopped selling - stopped MAKING.

I'd call that serious enough to have it checked before taking a long trip with the truck. But hey, it's your life, cowboy - you show 'em no-one is taking you for a fool!

:P
