which Tundra to buy?

Looking at 2 trucks….

First is an 06 double cab TRD with 43,000 miles on it for $16,000

Second is an 08 double cab with 88,000 miles for $14,000

Both trucks are 4x4 and I have 2 kids under the age of 2 that I haul around with me from time to time. The 06 DC has a bigger back seat even though its a smaller truck

It's only 14,000 dollars? I thought tundras were like 40,000 dollar trucks.

For $2000 dollars more, you get a truck with HALF the miles. seems like an easy choice to me.

I bought my Tundra new. It's an absolute beast. It replaced my Chev half ton and trust me, the Tundra is twice the truck. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the /06 will have the 4.7L and the /08 should be the 5.7L.
The /06 will serve you well.

2008, it had a much needed facelift. That 2006 isn't much to look at. And $16k for an 8 year old truck? Maybe if it had real gold sprinkled in the paint.

If the 08 has the 5.7L V8 you don't have to worry about the timing belt like the 06. The 06 has a a lot of miles before changing the timing belt but that's one thing to keep in mind when keeping the truck long term.

I like the 06's better because you can get a full 4 door pickup with a standard size bed.

I'd shop based upon need. Avoiding timing belts is nice, but since its only every 100k I don't think it's that big of a deal. mpg wise, the older 4.7 and the newer 5.7 are actually not that far apart, as the 5.7 got a six speed auto. And the 5.7 has loads more power--which really is only necessary for towing, racing between lights and bragging. Which may or may not be important.

I drove a first gen once, and IIRC it did feel much smaller... I don't know what you are used to driving, but I know my second gen is a huge beast.

Have you crawled under and done a rust inspection?

The 2nd Gen trucks are a lot better IMO. I own a '08 and it's a great truck. If it has a 5.7L, it's a great engine, very powerful. After owning nothing but big three trucks before, I won't be swtiching back. The price seems high on the '06 to me.

The 06 Double cab is larger becuase it was the "crew cab" while hte access was the Extended cab in those years. In '07 the extended cabs were called double cabs and the crew cabs became "crew maxes".

The V6 version is somewhat interesting, high mpg's and lots of gears. Nice and deeply geared, but with close gear splits (8 speed ZF), so if you were to use it as a truck you would still have 300hp to get whatever it is done.

I noticed on TTAC a nice writeup about the ZF 8 speed. I noticed though that while first is 4.7:1 reverse is a lousy 3.3:1 (or similar). I *hope* Dodge used a better reverse gear than that!

I do wonder about engine heat; I wonder how "good" it is to run at/close to peak loading for long periods of time. I guess we'll know in a few years how this setup works out. mpg, towing, longevity. But it does look pretty interesting.

I owned a couple of the first gen tundra's and found them to be an ideal combination of size and capability, as well as excellent build quality (frame rust issues are not an issue down here). The second gen truck is great, but a little big and in-your-face for me. That being said, the '06 truck is now a 15 year old design and is starting to look it's age.

I dont think the original double cab (04-06) was available as a 6 seater, even though the access cab (00-06) could be 5 or 6 seats. MAybe the 08 has a middle seat up front, might be something to consider. Timing belt on the 06, but the tires might be cheaper...could average out in long run. I'm more familiar with the older tundras, and the drivetrain is pretty solid (engine, trans, differential). 2006 probably has the 5 speed which may not have a trans drain bolt or dipstick like the older 4 speed has. ON my 03 there is drain and fill bolts on the differential too, which is probably true of the 06, no idea on the 08.

I'd have a hard time not getting the 06, though I swore off timing belt engines, and <6 seat trucks. I like the bigger back seat of the 06 vs the 08.
