Hi,

I have been using different synthetic oils, but now, Corvette has its own Oil specification, 4718M I think. Now that dexos 1 brand licensing is in effect, does that supercede the other GM oil specifications.

I use the computer in the car for oil change intervals. I think the maximum mileage is 10,000 miles. Is Mobil 1 ok, or should I use M1EP? Or another brand?

Dexos1 is only needed for 2011 or newer GM vehicles. It primarily is a gimmick though. If I were you, I would run either AMSOIL or Royal Purple in that 'vette! Cheers

Royal Purple HPS or Amsoil

As much as I don't like saying it. Use M1. That motor will run great on it and it's readily available. If you want boutique, yes pick up amsoil or RP. Congrats on the vette though.

Or PP in 5W-30.

I used PP in my '05 C6 without any problems.

PP is even better today.

"PP is even better today". How so? GM doesn't know much about oil? PP has more builer recommendations than M1? PP has a better base stock? PP sells more 5-30 than M1? Just wondering.

I would stick to the M1 personally. If you think your driving will allow you to go 10k on the OLM then you can get the EP M1 if you want the extra goodies in it but my guess is the regular M1 would be just fine. It is a very good oil to keep things clean from my experience. On the other hand the LS1 of that vintage ( I used to own one ) had issues with the pcv sucking in too much oil and causing it to ping. If you find that you have that issue you may want to try different brands to see if maybe something with a lower NOACK might work better or even a catch can. Not sure if they ever worked out a fix for the PCV system in those or not. Congrats on the car by the way, loved the way those drove.

Tig:

I took that quote to mean that PP is "even better today" than when he used it.
I think he's saying that the latest PP is better than the original or second (Gr. III) version. I don't think he was comparing it to M1.
PS: How many versions of PP have there been since it was introduced?

Mobil 1 5w30 worked fine for the first 150,000 miles I drove my LS1 Camaro. Then I switched to other oils that also worked well: M1 High Mileage 5w30, Redline 5w30, PU 5w30. I got the lowest oil consumption on Redline, but M1 HM was almost as good, and can be bought in your local WalMart.

I also bought a 2001 Corvette LS1 last month. The local dealer had just done a Mobil 1 OC with an ACDelco filter. I was planning to use something else next OC but after extensive reading on here, I'm sticking with Mobile 1 5W30. And like everyone says , it's pretty cheap at Wallymart. At 85,000 miles, I am planning to change the ATF and rear end oil; leaning toward Redline or Amsoil.

Thanks for the update. Like all oils there are changes in the formulatios from time to time.

Any 5W-30 syn that meets the older GM 4718M spec is gonna' be just fine...

It is a pushrod small block for God's sake! They used to run straight 30-weight in 'em for decades.

Cheers!

I thought that in '01 they went to the LS6 intake on ALL LS1s, which eliminated the problematic PCV system and used the valley cover internally mounted PCV breather system, even on the f bodies??

Did you have a C5 or an f body?? What year?

Any that say cj-4,sn (aka gf-5,ya sn and gf-5 is the same.it is mentionned in the standard)i bet if i ask eu they ll say: we only have gf-5 rofl.i love marketing.

Agree with all other posters who said that any 5W30 synthetic that meets GM specifications will do just fine. Mobil 1 5W30 is a good choice since it is the factory fill.
