Changed the oil on my wife's Vw 2.5L recently. We typically have run Mann filters, but have also run Hengst (both German made).

We had gotten a Bosch free or for just a dollar or two during one of the good M1 deals at AZ. Used it this OCI - only 5k per the computer, which I think only counts down.

Wasnt happy to see how it looked, as the Mann and Hengst filters never deformed like this... It appears that the bosch is ever so slightly too long? No tears, but the deformation is obvious.

I think the plastic standoffs at the top and bottom circumference of the center tube are too high/thick. IIRC, the Mann and Hengst ones are rubber, not plastic, and shorter.

Jim,

Not sure I'd get another one of those again. What weight oil did you use? Not that it has anything to do with the ripples. At least it didn't come a part. Then I'd be fuming.

I wouldn't worry too much about a few pleats bending like that. Could be with use they elongate some and have to take on bend.

The car has run Valvoline 5w-40 and M1 0w-40 primarily recently. I had done some OCIs with M1 5w30 ESP rated VW 504/507, but found that the ga$$ers deplete TBN too fast. I think we ran M1 0w-40 that OCI.

Short for that oil, I think the computer wasnt flashed for the right OCI (10k miles), but Im ok running 5k, as I havent done a UOA for a while. I have one and will submit it when I have a chance, and may extend to 10k going forward.

That's some poor QC. I'd check another one out at the store and see if yours was a dud, or if they all have that issue.

It was definitely all straight going in. Wouldnt have put in a filter that looks that way.

It would be fun to go to the parts store with a big set of calipers and determine variations in filter length

I wonder what Bosch would say if you sent them pictures of that filter? Might be interesting to hear the explanation. They may even send you a few new filters for the feedback.

+1 I bet they send you something for your time

Personally I would stick with the MANN or VW OEM (which are MANN) and skip all the others. Sometimes, the OEM filters, though made by some company just are "better". I often haggle with my VW dealer and get 5 OEM VW filters for $20. I mean, are we really sweating $4??? Not saying you can get the same price, but you can shop around and while at the dealer just suggest it. I always say, give me 5 for $20 and you got a deal. They usually do it. haha.

Yeah, usually I run Mann, Hengst or Mahle, depending upon the vehicle and COO/OE manufacturer. I had this Bosch because of the AZ deal - wasnt going to let it go to waste.

While my Audi had a spin on filter, there definitely was a difference between its spin on Bosch and the spin on Bosch I use on the G37. So, I wonder if there's some difference between German Bosch cartridge filters versus Bosch cartridge filters for other applications.
