Flame away if not true: I have heard from a few sources that Bosch recently bought Purolator, therfore Bosch filters at Autozone are the same product. Your $.02?

Yep... as supplies of the old Bosch filters fade away, what's being replaced in the Bosch-Duralast cardboard box for typical passenger vehicles are Purolator filters. Supposedly, the regular Duralast are Premium Plus - the Duralast Premiums are Pure Ones.

My 2 cents: I don't think the Bosch premium is the same as a PureOne. I've cut both open (new, side by side) and see different color filter media. The Bosch media is slightly thicker too. The ADBV on the Bosch, though reddish color seems to be a completely different material than the P1. The P1 ADBV is thicker and more firm. Also, Schultz graciously agreed to do a Bubble Point test of a sample of the new Purolator-made Bosch media I mailed to him so we can compare it to the (new and old) PureOne media. This may take several weeks or months, I'm told.

Hmm, it seems like it would have been easier for them just to paint the outside of a P1 black; or at least that's what I thought they were doing until I read your post.

Advance Auto Parts uses Purolator for their store brand filters. There are lots of similarities to the Purolator Premium Plus, but there are a few differences in filters that were cut open. One was that on the Prem. Plus, the ends of the filter media were crimped together with a metal band... on the Advance filter, they were glued.

If this is true about the Duralast filter, it would be interesting to see if the ends of the media on the regular Duralast are crimped or glued...suggesting it might be the same filter as the one sold at Advance (minus the grippy coating).

Problem is, I don't go to AZ... I don't like their parts. Too much stuff comes over the counter stamped "Made in Mexico". No thanks.

Where do you find US made stuff consitently? It seems that more and more companies are going offshore. The last "Wix" fuel filter I purchased was stamped Made in China. The Stant thermostat I bought recently said Made in Korea. "NAPA" motor mounts came from India.

I was at my Autozone today to pick up an oil filter since i was out of the OEM ones i usually keep on hand, and noticed the Bosch 3323 filter for my car was no longer a twin of Walmarts Supertech line.

I always thought it odd that the supertech was 2.50 or so and the Bosch were at least twice that for what appeared to be the exact same filter.

However the new Bosch is very different from the supertech one. Gone is the cheap-looking plastic blue-button bypass valve and the drain back valve is now made out of silicon (red) instead of the plain old black rubber one.

I dont know if this is indeed a pure-one filter, but it certainly is an improvement over the previous Bosch filters, IMHO.

Purolator was/is owned by Arvin Meritor who has signed an agreement with Bosch and Mann to sell it and be run as a joint venture. See www.arvinmeritor.com. (noted; 9/06)

I think the effects of this are starting to get thru the supply chain. Keep eye out for any changes.
