I see O'Reilly's has there 5+ qt. containers of house brand synthetic oil and a Bosch oil filter for $21.99. How does the Bosch Premium filter compare to the MC FL-400s and the equivalent P1?

Bosch Premium = P1
Both filter 99.9% vs about 93% for MC.
MC may have a base end bypass.
Apart from filtering and bypass location the Bosch and P1 are otherwise similar to MC.
I switched from MC to Bosch Premium and feel it is an improvement

Bosch Premium filters are generally accepted as having a PureOne's media and silicone ADBV, but with a rubber o-ring and a smooth can.
Motorcraft 'S' filters are generally accepted as having Classic media, silicone ADBV, rubber o-ring and a base-end bypass.

I don't think I want to use Mobil 1. I have read too many Mobil 1 users are having engine noise from using Mobil 1.
Btw spend $8 more at PepBoys and get yourself Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy or EP and an Mobil 1 filter that also filters at 99.9% but go 10k or 15k on both the oil and filter instead of 5k

I just switched to a Fram 'Ultra'....costing $8.97 at WalMart. Its a premium filter with synthetic media....and should go easily to 12 to 15K.
I'll be using it for two OCI's of 7500 miles each. IMO, it might be the 'best buy' of all the premium filters available.

Which part number? I find it difficult to believe that all Classics would have identical efficiencies. That's as dubious as Ford's 50% or whatever their figure was on the old Motorcraft parts site.

It's more like 8 oz for the typical sized oil filter. Might be 1/2 qt if the filter was giant. If you typically put 5 qts of new oil in, then 8 oz would be 8/160 = 5%. And chances are, that 5% left in still has lots of miles left on it anyway.

The Bosch is an excellent filter, but for a Ford, you can't ever go wrong with Motorcraft. No, they aren't as efficient, but they certainly help in the 'strange noises' department. Just use the Bosch for this OCI and see what happens.

Having some experience with my son's 05 4.6L Explorer when he owned it here's my take. He had a quick lube filter installed once and had a start up rattle for that oci. Next time he switched back to the FL-820S, no start up rattle, and never used anything else till he traded it.
As said, Bosch Prem same as P1 and more efficient than FL-400s. If no start up rattle then, good to go this oci, or anytime there's an oil/filter promo using BP or P1. Can switch back the MC after this oci if you choose.

I'm using Mobil 1 0w20....for two OCI's of approximately 7500K on one Fram Ultra. Mobil 1 is a 10K oil, so it should work out fine.

what is your reasoning for doing this? are you doing it to save money? you could easily get 2 pureones for the same price as 1 fram ultra. or you could use purolator classics or motorcrafts and it would actually be cheaper.
i was wanting to try it to reduce the mess and waste from the oil changes. maybe i will try this on my next oil change and see how it goes...

I used M1 for about 15 years and in the last couple of years I have switched to Pennzoil Ultra. I honestly believe my engines are running quieter, but I don't have scientific proof.

Reasoning: IMO....Filters don't start maximum filtration until they are on for 2 to 3K....so changing them more often contributes to more wear.
Secondly, the media in the Fram Ultra is synthetic....while it's not on the PureOne. The Ultra also has longer life expectancy (up to 15K)....and has excellent construction.
And lastly....the cost of the Ultra at Walmart is just under $9.00....so that the cost of each OC is just under $4.50.....not very much more than a PureOne on sale.
BTW....I have been a PureOne filter user for the last four years and still consider the PureOne as a excellent buy for the buck. I would use them again in a pinch, but only for one OC.
