Gentlemen,

I have a question.

I own a 2000 Toyota Tundra that is STILL on its original Panasonic battery. The truck still starts fine, but I've been wondering how much longer to push my luck. The battery is a group size 27F.

Anyway, PepBoys this weekend for its BlackFriday sale has the Bosch Premium Plus (manufactured by Exide) for $94.99 with $10 instantly off with a $20 mail-in rebate from the manufacturer. That would make the net cost of the battery approximately $65. I've found a stored with a 09/09 manufactured unit so there is a fresh one. The manufacturer's warranty is three years/96 months.

So, I'm a bit torn. After reading everyone's battery comments most people suggest Johnson Controls (Walmart Maxx, Autozone Duralast, Advance Auto Titanium/Silver, Interstate, etc), but noone ever says anything positive about Exide. I was prepared to purchase most likely an Advanced Auto Silver, but along came this Bosch Premium Plus Option.

So, does anyone have any experience with this particular battery? And should I just go with one of the Johnson Control options and call it a day?

The nice thing about this is you can probably find someone at pep boys to flunk your battery within the warranty period if you have any suspicions at all about it. If they don't wiggle the alligator clips just right for a great connection, etc, some inept folks can't test a battery all that well.

Have had or seen a couple tolerable NAPA golds, probably the same thing.
 
I would stay away from Advanced Auto Parts Batteries....When I managed an AutoZone we used to warranty their batteries when they would not warranty their own batteries and steal market share that way. They always gave people the run around on battery warranty. Their warranty is National it is only for the store you bought the battery at and I think you have to hold onto the reciept.

Exide makes batteries for a lot of different places and they are like all other's. They build to a price point. They have some great batteries and some junk ones.. You always get what you pay for when it comes to batteries. So if you want it get it but it seems pricy to me! A yellow Max Start from Walmart can not be more then $50 and Autozone's Duralast is well bellow $70 for the non-gold model. What ever you do stay away from Advanced Auto Parts batteries they have a cheaply made product that they like to try and get out of warranting!

Walmarts Maxx Start, Interstates Megatron, AutoZOnes Duralast or Duralast Gold all great products. I too just replaced myPanasonic note because it failed but it was 6 years old and I did not want to wait for it to fail. The Duralast Gold in the wifes car is 9 years old and is a side post. I need to get here a new one even though the current one is working fine! You can not push start an automatic and I do not like to wait for a battery to fail.



The Exide sounds like a good deal just as long as you always going to be near a Pepboys!
 
I'd prolly spend a little more and get one of the Duralast Gold 84 month batteries from AZ, I think they are around $85- $90. They're made by JC, and AZ is easy to deal with about warranty issues.

There are some things on my rig that I think spending a little extra $ on is worth it, and my battery is one of them. All you have to do is get stranded one time with a cheap battery and you'll agree.
 
Sounds like a good price. Go for it if you have a Pep Boys close to you. I have owned both Exide and Johnson Control batteries (as I posted in the question of the day thread yesterday) and frankly, have had more problems with the Johnson Control batteries. IMO, what is probably of more importance than brand is to purchase the battery at a facility that has a large turnover in stock. Old stock sitting on a shelf degrading does not bode well.

You do realize that Advance Auto batteries are identical to those listed above - all being made by Johnson Controls?

I have gotten warranty replacement from Advance Auto on their batteries without a receipt or having to go back to original store of purchase.
 
I just got a new battery for my mom's car this morning. Her original AC Delco from 2003 finally bit the dust. I got one from Advance Auto, made by Johnson Controls. It had either 600 or 700CCA, can't remember exactly. It was an AutoCraft Gold manufactured in 9/09, on sale for $80 and we got $10 off of that with the $10 off a $25 purchase coupon. No mail in rebates to mess with, either.

They told us that they store the receipts in their computer for 3 years. After that, you have to get a copy of the receipt for the ProRated warranty.
 
The group size 27F battery is not available at my local Walmart, Costco and Sam Clubs. My 1994 Lexus LS400 uses the same group size 27F and I had a hard time to find it at local auto parts stores.

I think for final price of $65, the Bosch Premium Plus 27F is a good buy. You should buy it if you need a new battery, before that sale/rebate expired.
 
As I have been looking at/for the 27F, it's not as easy as everybody would like to think in my area of the country (unless you've got a lot of money and don't care about spending it). This is the same issue as HTSS_TR pointed out about finding it in "local AutoParts stores" and that's what I've found too.

Sears has that group size only in their International line which means $135... Autozone doesn't carry a 27F (only the 27).... the cheapest I can find the Interstate 27F for is $95. You can get it directly from the Toyota dealer for $99.

So that's how I get to Advance Auto/Johnson Controls and the Pep Boys/Bosch/Exide battery decision. The Advance is $85 in their Silver line w/ 2yr/72 month warranty (which I can use the $10 coupon off of $25 for - there is no 3 yr/84 month battery available in that size) and then there is this Bosch option for $95 with a $20 mail-in rebate and its 3yr/96 month warranty (I was told earlier tonight that the rebate is going on until the end of the year). Essentially, the price becomes the same. The Exide/Bosch may be $10 less via the in-store instant rebate off for the Bosch if I can sweettalk the mgr because I was misinformed by the store tonight about when the instant $10 price drop ended.

JohnBrowning and hate2work, I agree with you - I'd buy the Duralast if it was available. I bought the plain Duralast for a different vehicle nine years ago and just replaced it... so I can't complain about that at all. Matter of fact, when it gets time to replace the 24F, I'll probably go straight to Autozone.

Tdbo, thanks for the input about having just as much trouble with either... that's sort of what I'm after with my question.
I'm really trying to understand if I should just throw out the Exide option.. but the idea of a 3yr warranty at the same price as a Johnson Controls 2yr makes the Exide tempting.

I got a warranty replacement on a 5-year-old radiator from them that way.
 
Buying a battery is really a roll of the dice. You could buy a great Exide or a bad Johnson Control battery. You will never know until you stick it in your car. The key is the warranty and the integrity of the establishment you purchase it from.
