Always played likable characters, and from what I've read, the man himself was as well.

My favorite Newhart bit was when he accompanied his wife to a Mensa party and there was an arrogant Mensa guy at the party that could pronounce anyone's first name backwards. He did a few people and then asked Newhart his first name. Newhart dead pans, "Bob". It cracked me up as a kid and all during a Mensa party that I attended years ago with my wife.
