If the owner want to do his own oil change between free dealer 20k oil change, he should buy Mityvac Fluid Evacuator MV7201. The cost is about $60-70, it will pay for itself after 4-5 oil changes.

Newer BMW's and MB's are designed to suck out the oil from dipstick, and the cartridge oil filter is on top of the engine so that it is easy to change without going under the car. It should take less than 20 minutes to change oil+filter and no mess.

Since he is in Florida, he should consider Delo 15W40 and 5k OCI for oil but 10k for filter.

That's pretty much what I've been doing every 5-6k miles on GC. Easiest and cleanest oil change ever.

FYI, I'm not sure what the algorithm for oil change intervals is on the newest models, but on mine it is strictly based on the amount of fuel consumed which is 2375 liters (627 gal). So, if I were to average about 25 mpg, I would have to drive about 15.5k miles before the computer would tell me to change the oil.

Interestingly enough, I know a lot of people in Europe who actually adhere to this and have not had any oil sludge issues despite pretty high miles on their engines.

Is the synthetic oil in Europe any different than the stuff we get here in North America?

Looking at MB approved oil sheet 229.5 for newest engines, the names of 4 out of 5 oils are "European Car Formula". Four out of 5 are xW30 and they are not approved for AMG engines. Only M1 European Car Formula 0W-40 is approved for AMG engines and is on the 229.5 list.

I'm familiar with those extractors.
Must you change from the top? Have they eliminated the drain plugs, or just prefer you do the extraction from the top?

No, they did not eliminate the drain plugs but they don't have oil dipstick for newer cars and trucks. If you have newer MB cars or trucks at MB dealer for oil change, they will vacuum the oil from dipstick, using dipstick tube as vacuum tube, because it is faster that way.

BMW is 15k changes, not 20k so this dealer seems to be blowing smoke. For BMW if it's under warranty your entitled to a free oil change every year if it's less than 15k on the oil. So if you only put 6k on your oil but it's been one year, BMW will change the oil.

Yes, there is a dipstick tube to suck the oil out. The cars do not come with dipstick but they like to sell the "oil measurement device" to drivers who want to check oil manually.

Also, they didn't have transmission fluid dipstick for many years.

uh... the latest BMW engines don't have dipsticks, nor dipstick tubes. The vacuum extraction isn't possible with the newer engines that have valvetronic (variable valve lift). you can measure your oil level electronically from inside the car by pressing some buttons and the oil level sensor will tell you the level.

it's well known among bmw enthusiasts, change your oil more frequently!! Plus, around here in Socal, dealers want $170 for an oil change!!! The oil and filter doesn't even cost $70, so every DIY oil change is $100 in your pocket; worth about two tanks of gas.

Thats odd, I have had an E90 320i and 330i and have a 130i and there is no dipstick what-so-ever. I have been in the workshop while they drained the oil and it comes out the sump. Maybe the Mercs are like that , not the BMs.

Agreed. That's why all of my cars are currently for sale. I just cannot wait to buy a used Taurus or two...

That's what I do as well; oil changes are dead easy and cheap to perform. I go with a 7500-8000 mile OCI on my wife's X3 and I perform an annual change on the Club Sport and 02.

Not sure if that's the deal anymore.

With the E92 models, they've dumped the Service Interval Indicator in favor the new Condition Based Service (CBS) system. This system splits up the services individually. Oil Changes can be as low as 10k to as high as 20k. The onboard display usually sets a date of 2 years or the determined mileage before the next service, so I'm not sure if you're allowed to get the one year free change.

That was my understanding as well. Possibly MBs still have dipstick tubes. Some of the latest VAG engines also have dipstick tubes, but you have to buy a dipstick separately should you require one. Kind of retarded if you ask me that in this day and age when a ton of fancy features such as DSC are becoming standard, some of the basic ones are becomig optional.

I believe that's correct, the oil change now comes up at 2 years.
