"Drives like a BMW ought to": why the iX3 is Top Gear's 2026 Car of the Year

Neue Klasse for the win!
"The future is electric – and more convenient than before. The BMW Vision Neue Klasse concept is developed from the ground up in order to yield more range, faster charging and increased efficiency – all thanks to the sixth generation BMW eDrive."

The real win is the "Heart of Joy"; unlike previous cobbled together systems that can only work together so well...
"The life of the Neue Klasse begins here. The BMW Heart of Joy combines powertrain software, driving dynamics, and state of the art technology powered by BMW intelligence. The result is a highly responsive, millisecond-precise, and energy efficient driving machine."

Quite the turnaround from the days of the i3. That has been reviewed as one of the worst driving EVs of all time.

Here is a question. If the EV comes in a bit more expensive, are you going with the ICE version? The range on the EV is quite good. The complexities of an ICE vs simplicity of battery.

"The i3’s lower profile mean it has an estimated 440-mile EPA range, 40 miles more than the iX3."

Probably ICE. If I get a new job which requires commuting I would maybe consider leasing the EV as a commuter car where I could charge it on the weekend.

2018 is old?

180k is high mileage?

Laughing.
180k is high mileage. Who do you know keeping vehicles past 200k when everything else starts to fall apart? And who is to say they won't last?

I'm laughing at stop/start/oil consumption, 1.5L turbos, and cylinder deactivation and how the ICE BMW will need Valvoline Restore and Protect at some point.

"I’ve had my model y performance since 2022 and I’ve put 320k miles on it and I drive it stupidly hard everywhere as I love the torque and I’ve only had to replace tires and I upgraded the brakes as I wanted good braking power. I’ve replaced nothing that’s caused issues.Coming from bmw’s and Audi’s etc with leaking coolant, boost issues, the amount of stress that’s been lifted off me is just life changing."
