First oil report from Blackstone after install of Motor Guard Bypass filter from RalphPWood. Keeping records for warranty records.
Oil Mobil 1 5W/30
Miles on Unit 11,322
Miles on Oil 2,000
Comments: These toyotas wear very nicely, as you can see in the wear metals of the universal average column. Our average oil sample from this type of engine has 5500 miles on it. You have run just 2000 miles on this fill and your wear was all below average, as expected, showing no obvious problems with the engine. You could stretch out to 4000 miles (or longer) on the oil for the next sample, if you wanted. This oil is working well for you. There was no harmful contamination in this sample. The bypass filter is working very well--note the very low insolubles.

looks great, a he11 of alot better than the amsoil 5w30 did in my 2003 Tacoma V6 it had 78ppm of copper in like 6K miles. Doesnt the tundra have the same built in oil cooler on the block like the tacoma has where the copper supposedly comes from??

2003TRD-Don't remember about the oil cooler, I know it does not have one in front of the radiator. My son-in-law has a 2004 4-Runner V8 and it has a nice oil cooler in front of the radiator. Will look tomorrow.

The copper can come from bushings, bearings, thrust washers, friction plates, oil cooler and additives or so it's written on the back of a Pennzoil Quaker State oil analysis report. I sent a sample of new Mobil 1 to a lab and they were concerned about the Molybdenum content. Melybdenum is used by Mobil as an anti wear additive. The new oil also had a trace of glycol which is sometimes found in new oil.
I sent some filters to Cape Canaveral. The engineer said that sometimes new oil is too dirty to use so they filter it before they put it in the engines. I had always thought that new oil was clean and got dirty because of poor filtration. He said that it is not unusual for oil analysis to show that after an oil and bypass filter change the oil gets cleaner.
I have picked up some good info on these forums. People on Bobs seem to be more interested in oil and filters.
I put a Cummins Fleetguard LF-750 filter on a 8.3Cummins yard mule at work. The LF-750 A element for it uses shredded newspapers. I machined a kit that adapts it to take 2 rolls of Kleenex Viva paper towels and three rolls of Scott TP. It makes an element about 7 1/2" by 15". It took 4 gallons of oil to top off the engine. I am setting up a LF-500 to take just 2 rolls of Kleenex Viva. The stock orifice is at the outlet and is a little too large for a small engine. I am putting a 1/16" orifice at the inlet. It's a beautiful filter but it is gloss black and gets scuffed up in the shipping box. Fleetguard needs to wrap them a little better. I think with some ingenuity the filter can be bolted up under the larger pickups.
I think just to be safe and make the boss feel better I will install a secondary 25 micron hydraulic filter. On the yard mule I had a lot of room under the filter so I used a 3/8" pipe nipple and screwed on a Perma-Cool remote filter mount at the outlet. I put a little spin on filter on the mount. The hydraulic filter has a removable sintered bronze element.
I have never worried about the TP filters but when you roll your own elements you have to cover your butt.

Ralph-Great web page that shows pictures of new oil on the homepage.
