I agree, 99% get oil changed at dealer or iffy lubes. 1% change it themselves. Out of that 1% about 75% believe in old myths, like thicker oil is better in winter and Pennzoil is full of wax etc.

FRAM's OCOD perceptions has haunted FRAM long before BITOG and even the internet being mainstream. FRAM's recent video's are more of culmination from competitors having cut-out displays showing the fiberboard end-caps, to various other boards and social media in addition to BITOG giving their two cents on the OCOD filters.

The only influence I can see are on those who agree to advertise on this site.
We also has a Pennzoil rep who we thought was going to solve our rebate issues but she disappeared.
So yeah, we are BIG players when it comes to influencing oil companies.

Well, you do see a response from the majors occasionally, like the one in the last couple of days from Shell regarding Pennzoil Ultimate Platinum. They are paying attention at some level, although perhaps not for the reasons we might expect.
If I were running a major, I'd think about BITOG as either a marketing opportunity or as a data set. On the data side, the compendium of used oil analysis provides a dandy way to tell if a formulation adjustment has made any noticeable difference to product performance. While we may look at differing additive levels from one sample to the next and wonder what's going on, they know exactly which version of the product is which and they can confirm that their lab testing results are consistent with what's happening "in the wild".
On the marketing side, it's not so clear-cut. Shell must think it's worth the trouble, while others don't see the point in getting caught up in the fray. Do any of us have any real influence on how other people buy oil? Not likely, so convincing us how good their products are won't move the needle. You're more likely to move more product if the name's four inches high on a NASCAR fender than if it's on a banner on BITOG.

Here was my growing up years and intoduction to oil changes. My dad, " Son, take the car down to Kenneth's Shell station and have him change the oil". That now was all I knew. Good old Shell 30 wgt in 1962 for summer oil. Used that oil for years before that to in the 50's. We never blew an engine, never...my o my, that ancient oil, how did we ever survive those times..Ps, we had no cell phone, no microwave, no Starbucks,biasply tires, and guess what,,engines with carbuerators Omy. lol
