BITOG has a reputation for banning.

You need to make it entertaining. Cultivate a "Breeteesh: text based accent.

Full disclosure: I was banned twice in the past (and I hope only twice).

Did you notice that the user on Macworld that was whining about being banned from BITOG is now also listed as banned on Macworld? By the way, I remember him-he went under multiple user names and was caught (GoldenRod was one). He's not telling the full story in his Macworld thread.

Perhaps it's not the moderators here but rather a few people that aren't mature enough to exercise control over what they say and write. I suspect they'd get banned on any decent board they tried to join. The vast majority here never get banned (or even a warning).

There is no correct context for vulgar language. If you can't make your point without profanity then it's time to work on your language skills.

Yes but I don't think this would work out because we all have our own idea what is and what isn't swearing. The current young generation seems to think it's OK to use *F* words around their parents, grandparents, teachers, and anyone in general. I'm totally against it.

Personally I'm glad this site doesn't allow swearing. It teaches us all to watch our mouths, like the way we did/do in my generation, back in the day when they didn't use any foul language on TV.

Allowable language on TV just keeps creeping on and on, and one day there may be *F* words spoken on TV. Why can't it just stay the same? Why does language on TV have to keep getting more foul all the time? It tends to make me want to avoid TV shows that use foul language. I like things the way they used to be better.

+1

Foul language is unnecessary. The older I get, the less I like to hear it at all.

That is why you have been on my ignore list for quite some time now chevrofreak.

The fact that BITOG is, in fact, intended to be a family-friendly website and enforced as such is one reason I still like this board.

Tony ran a tight ship, no question about it. If Helen and the other moderators wish to continue in that tradition, more power to 'em. The one major challenge they have, though, is maintaining consistency in enforcement with such a very large board. But moderators are human, too- let's never lose sight of that.

Gary, most people are more tolerant of faults in others that they, themselves, share. Less tolerant of non-shared faults. Of course, "pot calling kettle black" people are hilarious.

Um, I don't NEED it to EXPRESS myself, so....

- I just said i wish i could use it sometimes, where it fits.
(see that sentence was just fine without any profanity, but sometimes one can make things really entertaining and colorful by using correct amount of profanity @ the correct spot) :)

Swearing... My favorite pasttime. =-)

As long as its not overused, it doesn't bother me. Its only words, like any other word in the dictionary. They make effective adjectives.

Alex.

It's been said to "forgive, but not forget", and that's a good standard, so I can't expect anything more from the Mods.

Although I still have my moments, I've been assured that I'm in good standing and that helps a lot.

I'm not here to fight with anyone, but I actually see a lot of belligerence from some members, and I don't mean toward me.

The best formula is to treat people the way you would want to be treated yourself.

I completely agree. I'm 32 but would not think about using foul language in front of the parents and especially in front of the grandmother. It's a matter of respect. Besides that, if I did it growing up I would've been quickly shut up by my father.

Unfortunately people have a need to push the limits and I'm sure everything will be allowed on regular TV in time. Just the other day some new country song came on the radio and I wasn't sure if I was hearing it right. Two of the words used in the chorus were previously not allowed on the radio. I wouldn't really care if it stayed just this one song. It was kind of funny but I'm sure it's just setting the way for others to follow.

They probably think their CDs will sell better if it has some profanity in it.

My parents were very strict about profanity. If I had ever spoke any, I'd bet I would have gotten a backhander across the mouth.

Wow! A backhander across the mouth would be OK, but profanity (mere words) were not?
That's some mixed-up standards!

I personally have no problem with profanity, it's only words, and they don't hurt me.
If profanity is overused, it's effect is less meaningful. If a particular individual uses profanity excessively or inappropriately (Yes! I believe profanity can be appropriate as a means of extreme emphasis. The word is a communication Tool.) then it just shows His/Her lack of communication skills.
Euphemisms (Heck etc.) To me just seem a little 'Silly' and pointless.
But, This is a private site, the owner can make any rules she likes, we live with them or were 'Darned'
