BITOG has a reputation for banning.

sounds like me when I was growing up. I was the kinda kid when you told me not to do something, I would do it just because you told me not to do it. I could never serve in the armed forces.

Seems like this has gotten far afield from the original post. The bottom line is that I suspect there are a vanishingly small number of virgin ears/eyes around here so the twitchy censor of "grown up" words seems a bit silly. I'm willing to bet the average age 'round here is well into the 40's so perhaps using Sunday School standards for the language filter might be a bit over the top, no?

But where do you draw your line? Like I said, mod'ing this board is like herding cats. You can manage to wrangle them back on the preferred free range, but sooner or later they end up back in the verboten zones.

The behavior is something that obviously needs containment. I'm not exempt from violations. It's very much a mob/group mentality that feeds into itself.

..and you wonder why it looks chaotic in some foreign lands..

Taxi strike! Viva the revolution!!

random thought: (i think mob behavior reminded me of this): that "ID this animal" thread was fun :) remember that, guys?

Usually I see the Banned members for the most part having committed violations of what is a ruled-forum. IOW, you break the (plainly stated) rules, you get warned, then banned. What I seem to notice more than banned folk, is threads that seem to get locked or 'disappear', and often times I am left scratching my head wondering what it was that got it locked (other than the obvious R/S/P), and in one case, a moderator getting the 'last word' in a thread and directly taunting the targeted person in to replying to his post, and openly saying he would ban him if he did reply to it. To me, that was clear Moderator abuse. But for the most part, while I feel some of the words the censor catches are kinda nitpicky, I accept it, and try to enjoy and give/take information from the board as it was designed to do.
