My wife and I are tossing around the idea of buying a 2012 Jeep Rubicon. [I know its a little early but I'm in the fact finding phase.]

They come stock with BFG Mud Terrain Tires, how bad are these tires in rain and packed snow?

Pretty high void-rubber ratio, like all MT tires, so rain performance is likely pretty good...but without the siping or low-temp rubber compounds, like a dedicated snow tire, I would not want to try them on packed snow/ice...

The BFG AT T/A KO is good in the snow, but it has siping.

I would get a second set of tires for this vehicle given your winter conditions...

Thanks Astro, I'm probably better off with the Sahara, but resale value, gearing, a more robust vehicle, etc. has gotten me thinking Rubicon. I was considering selling the tires "IF" I buy it. My biggest concern is rain and packed snow.

They'll be good in rain. If you bought the Jeep, I'd give them a try in the snow and go from there. They can't be any worse than the average OE all-seasons!

My buddy was actually impressed with them on hard packed snow and general winter conditions, but a 7500 pound truck puts down a lot of pressure even on a 315 width tire. They're not nearly as good as his studded Goodyear Wrangler DuraTracs, but they weren't bad compared to the winter rated BFG All-Terrains he has also used on that truck. They were certainly better than the OE Michelin "highway tires" that came with it.

I read the reviews on the tires, and they seemed to have improved since about 2008, which leads me they might have been tweaked a bit. Some said they were good in rain, others said they sucked. Packed snow got mixed reviews as well. It also depends on the driver. I wish I actually knew someone that had those tires.

Before I sold my 2010 Unlimited I ran the Rubi BFGs for 18 months. I had them siped, and they worked great in the rain and snow of the NW.

If you aren't going to benefit from the added features of the Rubicon, don't spend the extra money.

I wouldn't spend the extra for the Sahara over the Sport for that matter. All you get with the Sahara is painted fender flares, and 18" wheels.

Having tires siped is new to me. Where do you have that done, and what is the approximate cost?

Most tire shops will do it. I have mine done at Discount/America's tire. Its about $9-10 per tire.

You know what's funny? I called two local tire shops here and no one knew what I was talking about. Honestly I never heard about it being done until I became interested in this Jeep. LOL I seems like it's easy enough to DIY if you have time and patience.

Two tire shops I'd steer clear of.
