what do you guys think would be better at cleaning a gas engine.
choices are Pennzoil Platinum, Pennzoil Ultra, or Rotella T6

Ultra from the advertising, other than that noone really knows as all they are going from is the advertising... People ask a lot about best oil to clean, but very little hard data, or pictures before/after of which oils they tried, and the pictures of before and after.. valve cover would be pretty easy.. I wouldn't pull a cover off either if it were still running.

Next up is MMO, or one of the other cleaning, aldoer chemicals/agents.. If the only had a scrubbing bubbles, man that would sell like Clearance Group IV/V oil at $2 a gallon...pick your boutique or favorite oil to dream about here LOL

Select the Pennzoil Ultra. I can affirm from first hand experience that it is very capable of cleaning. On my first run of PU, I noticed that the varnish stains on my dipstick were gone. Then on draining out the second run of the PU, I noticed a thin film of "sludge-like" stuff at the bottom of the pan that I drained the used oil into. I was very impressed! I bought my car with around 58k and ran Castrol GTX until about 108k. I then used Castrol Edge for about 3 changes before going to the PU. The Castrol Edge didn't even touch the varnish stains like the PU did. Give some PU a try!

PU definitely has an awesome additive package for cleaning. I'd feel very confident in using it for that purpose. I think it would be a fairly evident pick over platinum for cleaning, if all else is equal.

T6 I think uses less calcium but makes up for it with another detergent... I think magnesium (?) but I'm not sure how much better it is, if at all, over the other detergents. But I've heard quite a few people here say that T6 was very good at cleaning. But to me, since Ultra really focuses on this particular aspect (cleaning) in its marketing, I would probably go for it over the others. Though all will probably do a good job.

Personally I think Castrol p-ducts are lousy cleaners. I don't know if I am a conspiracy theorist or not but I think they cater to the people who think if the oil comes out almost the same color before you put it in, it must be great. I like PU for cleaning a gas engine, mobil 1 HM is very good too. How dirty is it? It may need more aggressive measures.

If you should choose the Dino group for cleaning, my vote would go to PYB for it's cleaning action.

i have some posts in additive section. https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/5-4-with-varnish-build-up.144607/
it has a very detailed explanation.
from what i can see its just got some varnish.(looking in the oil fill tube)
but i keep finding black specs this week in my oil filter and i drained a qt today to examine it had black specs in it too. they are soft and not magnetic so i think its just deposits coming out.
i think when this mmo oci is over im just going to run PP or PU and forget about it. maybe 3 or 4k ocis for a while

I think you'd never know the difference, except that buying whichever is cheapest will leave a bit more change in your pocket.

I have to agree. They will all do a great job at cleaning an engine. If you ran an UOA the Ultra probably will have an advantage (it is Shell's flagship gas engine oil); but to just look at them it will all look the same.

I haven't used PP or PU, but the T6 seems to be a decent cleaner. It un-gunked my front crank seal on the Jeep, and made it stop leaking after about 1500 miles.

my knee jerk opinion is the HDEO, but PU has some impressive calcium numbers. I would go with what is cheaper.

M1 HM also has some stellar calcium.

Doesn't the M1 HM also have some Boron in it too? Like a good shot of it I mean... I'm thinking ~250ppm. As does the PU I think. I know the add packs in those two oils are extremely impressive!

Well with out a side by side comprising know one will know but rest assure they are quality oil's that will do some cleaning.

but shooting from the hip I'd say PU or PP like mentioned above it has a nice add pack designed for cleaning.

We really have no idea here, although the SOPUS folks do know.
Any of these oils will probably clean, although almost any oil will clean in the sense that it will reduce visible build-up if changed frequently in a neglected engine.
A better question might be what do you need to clean?
