I have a 2005 Dodge Dakota with about 66k miles. I also put between 6000 and 7000 miles per year on the truck. In Dallas, I see one of the wider summer/winter temperature swings in the country- in 2011, for example, we saw lows of 9 F in the winter, and as high as 112 in the summer.

My first inclination is to use something like M1 5w-30 and change it once a year, but I'm curious as to whether the collective wisdom supports that, or if there's a better way to do things?

I use Mobil 1 5W-30 in my vehicles here in PA. It can get mighty cold in the winter and up to 100 in the summer. In many years of running this oil, I have had no issues winter or summer. IMHO, it is a fine synthetic oil and will give you excellent service in Texas. Once a year oil change should be fine, especially if you get it hot in the winter to drive off any moisture caused by cold engine condensation.

I would stay far far away from m1... go with a good oil like pu and change once a year or every 6k.

I prefer SOPUS synthetics over Mobil One but that being said for the OCI that the OP mentioned he is not going to find a "better" PCMO for this OCI.

Why is that? I am a SOPUS guy as well but curious why he should stay far away

My opinion is PYB and a P1 filter.
