Whats up guys?! Ive been using the GC 0w30 oil in my LS1 Camaro, but it tends to have a lil more valvetrain noise when i use it. I was wondering what other oils would be better to use to eliminate the extra noise. I would rather stay away from the Royal Purple or AMSoil simply b/c i dont want to have to order the oil so take that into consideration. Thanks guys and Ive heard great things about this site.

well. then i am honestly out of ideas.

if you want a REAL (Group 4 and 5) synthetic, and you dont want to use GC or Amsoil. I don't know what to tell you.

I have no idea what is REALLY in Mobil 1 any more, and most all of the other "store bought" synthetics, Pennzoil Platinum, etc etc, are Group 3 synthetics. Some may have a little PAO (group 4) added in.

Just an idea: We have 2 or 3 Amsoil dealers on this forum. Just give them a holler, and see what they can do for you price wise, you might be surprised. Plus, the Amsoil EaO filter is pretty nice.

Don't listen to your ears in this instance. Apparently, they have been taken over by some evil entity that is not working in your best interest. Stick with GC.

If you don't want Amsoil or RP, then you're #@$%! out of luck in wanting a PAO oil that you can get easily.

Redline, Motul, Neo, Fuchs etc. (aka the boutique of the boutique oils) are it after the above mentioned oils.

I'd personally stick with GC 0w-30. Valvetrain noise has more to do with a loose rocker than the oil IMO. GC has produced some of the, if not the best UOA results in the LS1.

well the valvetrain noise has some or alot to do with LongTube headers and cam(918 comp cam springs to go along). I just seem to notice the noise more with the GC oil.

Try some RedLine 10w30. Be prepared to pay a premium. But the odds of it producing less noise than GC are slim. You might try going thinner with some Pennz Plat 5w30 to see if it helps. With the 2-4-1 sale on at Advance Auto Parts, it's a cheap experiment.

I thought LS1 motors are known for valvetrain noise regardless of the oil used ?
dunno.gif

yeah they are LT4 Vette, but I just notice more when I use GC 0w30. I know that ordering AMSoil is easy doing it online but its really expensive plus shipping. Trying to pay same as I do with GC

I realize this is not the answer you requested, but I'm suggesting it any way. Stick with the GC. The results are in the UOA's. My 2000 SS gets GC and my cam-headers-LS1 seems to be happy. Will likely do my first UOA soon for certainty.

Having a helluva lot of LSX experience, our worse experiences have come with GC 0-30 and Amsoil 0-30. Slightly modified or even stock really perform well and have great UOA's with a XX-40 weight oil Many confuse piston slap with valve train noise. And try and releive the slap with thicker oils. Aint gonna work. We also sounded like a diesel truck with the 0-30 oils and yes it was valve train and not piston slap. UOA's showed major wear metal elevations. So I can relate to what your saying. On my highly modified 408 Stroker motor we run Amsoil 20-50 or Royal Purple Racing 41 with great success.
On my vette ( slightly modified with CAI/Heads/Cam/Exhaust) we run Pennzoil Platinum 10-30 and the motor is very happy. But most of the LS1/2/6's I am involved with we have taken them all to a XX-40 wieght oil and they are performing much better (oil pressure/temps) and providing excellent UOA's. If I were you I would try say a PP 5-40/Castrol Syntec 10-40 or in the dino flavors Castrol GTX 10-40 or Havoline 10-40.

I have no excessive valvetrain noise, nor do I have piston slap in my Corvette, and as everyone knows, I'm using GC. I hope I have just as much luck when I switch it over to PP 5w30 in a few months.

I would ignore the noise and keep running GC. Noise has little to do with the oil.

The only LS1/2/6s that do better on 12+ cSt / 3.5+ HTHS oil are defective factory units or aftermarket units with extra clearance built into them.
