best oil choice for F-150

Hey guys. I was wondering what a good oil for my ole truck would be.
2001 F150
4.6 lt V8
170,000 miles
mostly mildly driven
pulls a 19 ft bass boat once of twice a month
pulls a fairly heavy tractor once in awhile
uses about a quart to a quart and a half of oil between oil changes
no leaks
OCI 3000 to 5000 miles

I have been using Motorcraft blend 5w30, but she seems to be using a little more oil than in the past. However, she does not smoke.

MC is Excellent oil (nothing will be ANY "better" and your 170,000 miles proves that.

Change the PCV valve with a motorcraft unit and Motorcraft 5-30 will work well for you.

I use Redline currently in my 99 F150 4.6 but it's over kill. I will bve switching to pennzoil ultra when it's time for my next change

With 170K on the clock I wouldn't change a thing. My F150 burned 1 qt of oil every 3K since it was new. Don't stress over it. 5K OCIs are fine on that truck. While not the most powerful V8, the 4.6 Fords are very reliable.

You might want to try an oil with lower volatility. It may or may not help depending on where the usage is occurring.

I used Mobil 1 10w30 since day one in my F150. Occasionally, I would use Mobil 1 5w40 Turbo Diesel Truck (a more robust oil).

The truck now has 250K and still runs properly, uses no oil and is clean inside. My last sparkplug change showed hone marks still clearly visible. (borescope)

With his usage he may consider 0-40 Mobil 1 also. A very good product thats works well in the older modular engines.

Thanks for the replies so far. I have not replaced the PCV valve, but I will now. Also, is the Motorcraft oil filter better than the Fram Xtra Gaurd? Any other replies are greatly app.

yes continue using the 820s!! The Pureone and Bosch 3410 are also very good filters for the 4.6

Stick with the MC filter. Good filter at a good price. Ford's V8s are easy on oil. Conventional, synthetic, blend, 20 weight, 30 weight, 40 weight---its hard to go wrong. Experiment a little if you like. Try a 15w40 and see if your oil consumption goes down.

15-40 might be a little thick for an OHC engine. You want the oil to flow quickly on start up, this is why I suggested Mobil 1 0w40. The base stocks in the 0-40 are very good.

I would try a thicker oil like 10w30 and see if the oil consumption slows or stops and if it does not, Id try a 10w40. Motorcraft oil filters are pretty darn hard to beat. $3.67 at Walmart, you cant go wrong. Much better than Fram and cheaper.
