Which oil for a 2014 F-150 Ecoboost?

My 2005 Ranger states: "5w-20 has been tested to provide adequate protection for your engine". Adequate is not good enough for me...

This same argument comes up in like 50% of bitog threads. It's a 2005 Ranger the rest of the truck will fall apart long before the engine does, no matter the oil grade.

Sorry. Not where I live. My '93 F150 (255,000 miles), 2000 4Runner (258,000 miles) and '97 Van (175,000 miles) are rust free and I repair things as needed. Far cheaper than a monthly payment and insurance cost's. At this rate they will outlive me!

There seems to be a general internet consensus that the 3.5s running thicker oils end up with fewer cam phaser problems. I've switched to 10-30 in my 2.7 which still carries the ford spec on the back. I tend to stick with Pennzoil Platinum based on previous UOA results on this board over the last decade.

I want to be clear on something...there is something very wrong with these Ecoboost engines for these types of problems to occur. Ask any experienced mechanic, describe these issues to them and they will tell you the car is very messed up.

So, that said, the oil is not a solution or a cure to the issues. The Ecoboost is a really bad design.

From doing searches on the internet the wrong viscosity is what causes camphaser problems. From looking at oil analysis the Ecoboost engine seems.to turn the oil into a 5W20. However this might not be the true cause to the camphaser issues. We simply dont know.and are guessing and this is our best non engineer guess.

This is just a guess and keep in mind I am not.an engineer or a scientist. Just a regular Joe who.has no background in these matters. Probably if you can find an oil which wont turn into 5W20 you MAY not get these problems. You can only really figure it out through oil analysis. I csn tell you right now the usual Mobil 1 or Valvoline will be whipped into 5W20.

...and again this is a bad design. No other engines have these problems...and all that you read here is guesswork from non-engineers.

The Ecoboost engines have been around for 10 years. Yes, 10.

Thats an awfully long time for a really bad designed engine.......

You would think that after 10 years, and MILLIONS sold, they would be littered all over the junkyards and sides of the roads.

But I dont see them, do you?

I don't believe the "consensus" especially since the problem with Ford engines is very minute.

The "problem" engines are few and far between. I am willing to wager the reliability of the Ecoboost is close or better than the industry average.

Man that's funny
You got a guy that's not an engineer telling Ford they have a bad engine design. Navi have you even owned an Ecoboost or driven one ? I have owned one a 2011 first Gen of this engine and it was absolutely an amazing motor
As Srt20 said 10 years and Millions sold says it's a darn good design I'd say

This ^

There are several running around with 200k+ on them with very low failure rates considering the volume.

Run a decent 5w30 lube meeting the Ford spec and don't worry about it.

I can only speak for my own vehicle and situation. I dont know about others but Ive heard quite a bit so far of these matters. My Ecoboost is similar to Raptor Gen 2 450 horsepower engine.

This, a good friend has one @ 215k . He's trading for STX 2.7 this weekend. Mobil 1 silver cap 5w20 and 5w30 the whole time.

Well when you make statements like you have lately let's the world know you are thinking at micro level and you miss the entire picture.

Im certain everyone knows I speak for my own situation, but there are dozens of others on Youtube who seem to have similar situations. Just go on Youtube and google ecoboost cold start rattle and see it on video rather than reading about it.

Dozens on Youtube, out of MILLIONS sold...

People get on the internet to complain MUCH MUCH more then they tell you the good stuff.

Im not saying it does not breakdown. All brands breakdown. And I bet if you saw the percent of breakdowns per manufacturer or model, all vehicles are probably pretty close.

But to say its a "really bad design" is false.
