high Mileage 4.6, use 15w40?

I have thought about going to synthetic, but cost with a somewhat higher mileage car???, plus I am starting to think it has some blowby past the rings, how will that affect a synthetic? I am starting to think changing oil often (every 2000) is the way to go.

but a syn. would reduce heat shear down

yes, that was the other thing I wanted to post: noise @ startup has a LOT to do with the filter. For example, in my 98 chevy s-10 frams always cause startup noise regardless of temp. Super Tech filters will cause a slight knock when its really cold. AC delco filters never have any issue, never a sound at startup down to the coldest temps Ive ever started the truck at (5F)

Probably the same way for fords.

Dude, it's a Ford MODULAR ENGINE. We run those engines (4.6L) in a 600 RWHP Mustang with drag radials...10W30 is more than what is needed.

I didn't know this either. seems like complete BS to me, especially since my pal has a cobra and uses 5w30 (4V DOHC 4.6L).

All I'm saying is that you will lose a lot of MPG as well as a bit of HP if you use 15W-50, or even a 40 weight.

If you don't believe me, then try it!!!

Just trying to save you some money and grief.

Also, do you drive a Ford with a modular engine?
I have three right now...one is set-up for drag racing, and it sitting in my garage with Red Line 5w30 in the oil sump.

Why don't you do an experament and keep track of your MPG for three weeks on a regular ford approved oil (5W30 or 5W20). Then change to 15w-50 Mobil 1 and keep track of the gas milage. Then post it here to prove me wrong.
 
pS- The Cobra R has a 5.4L 4 Valve design, so how is that comparible to a standard 4 valve 4.6L DOHC or a 4.6L SOHC? The 2000 Cobra R was the fastest mustang to date,so maybe those 300 cars were spec'd for Mobil 1 15w50, but then again, that would go against my expereince with Ford.


This is different:


For the Cobra R, SVE developed high-flow aluminum cylinder heads, with dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. At the bottom, a Canton Racing Products oil pan provides extra oil capacity, reduced windage losses and improved oil control under racing conditions. To cool the synthetic oil used in the Cobra R’s engine, an air-to-oil cooler system is mounted behind the front fascia. The exhaust system consists of short-tube headers leading into a Bassani X-pipe system with catalytic converters, which was chosen to achieve emissions compliance and improved sound quality.
 
here is more info. I see Mobil 1, but no viscocity, yet. The engine is basically a normal NA 4v with a taller block for the extra stroke. I'd put my money on 5w30.

Ford's modular engine family was designed from the start with thin oil in mind. They don't much like heavier oil. They definitely run better with 5w30 or 5w20.

I have seen several of these engines blow off the oil filters with 10w30 on cold mornings. Biggest offenders were 91 to 94 4.6 SOHC engines in Town Cars, Grand Marquies, and Crown Victorias. Another rash of them on the 99 3.0 DOHC V6, with a smattering of others along the way.

It's your engine, but you wont find heavy oil in any of my Ford modular engines.

By the way, more thin oils are on their way. I remember a long conversation with my Motorcraft Oil rep about how 0w20 would be as common in a few years as 5w30 was then (about 1996). I wonder if 5w20 took it's place or if 0w20 is still on it's way.
 
The 2000 Mustang Cobra R did indeed come with 15w50.

However, keep in mind this isn't a normal engine. Unique rods, pistons, and I'm pretty sure a different crank. So it's entirely possible that it had different bearings and different clearances.

Of course, I don't have a shop manual for the 2000 Cobra R handy so I can't check and make sure. But those who say they have the same clearances....do you have a shop manual? If so, what are the clearances?
 
I tried a blend of Delvac 15w40 and Mobil 1 5w-40 T&S in an older Taurus for last change, and while it ran very nicely on the highway it had a lumpy idle when starting up. I'me using a blend of 10w30 and Mobil 1 T&S now, and it starts up normally. I used less oil with the last change than with the typical 5w30 conventional and synthetic blend that I've been using. I'm looking for some CI-4 10w30 to blend the Mobil 1 T&S with, as I think that will be ideal in the cars.

With as nicely as the 40 weight ran on the highway I can see why 'European oils' are often 40w or 50w for what seems to be the same engine that we use a 20w or 30w for in the US. They do run them harder there though. Driving with a friend of my wife around Frankfurt in her Audi I realized that she was a better driver than I'd probably ever be, zipping thru traffic in town and then cruising around 100mph on the highway with bursts to probably 120 mph or so.
 
dan, i looked at the shop manual at a ford dealer, the clearances are the same. (wish i'd had the opportunity to measure for myself.) i'm guessing the true difference is the intended use/application. the cobra R is marketed as a "racecar," so the oil temps at the end of a long track session might mean the 15w-50 is as thin as a 5w-20 is during light/regular street use.

the clearances are actually tight, compared to what i'm used to seeing. from memory (this is ~4 years ago) both the rods and the mains had .002" as an upper limit, with middle of the range roughly .015".

i actually did not intend to say i think the original poster should use a thick oil, i just wanted to point out the folly in making a blanket statement that modulars require thin oils. (a blanket statement even ford doesn't make, apparently.)

one thing i have noticed about (4V, i never had the opportunity to try this with the 2V) modulars is oil pressure. it's extreme. i put a mechanical gauge on a few i built while on the dyno, and i was shocked. the 100psi gauge is pegged through the upper half of the rev band.

i think they also have some sort of inherent oiling problem, either in the drainback, or maybe the pan/pickup design. during a lot of dyno pulls, i noticed the oil pressure drop all the way to zero, then slam all the way back to the peg, somewhere in the upper rev band. it did not happen consistently, but i noticed it on multiple cars, including ones that were near stock. this pressure loss was less than 1 second long, and so fast that the stock gauge and/or idiot light would never catch it, i never saw it until i used a mechanical gauge.

something else about those engines, the cam bearing bores are almost always out of line. one or more of the cam journals would usually be ultra tight. (i don't know if this plays into ford's recommendation of thin oils, but probably not.) i had a few problems with that when using aftermarket cams and/or mega rpm/hp, so we started to just machine the heads to insert cam bearings and all the problems vanished. (stock the cams ride directly on the aluminum of the head.)

i worked at mti, then helped start houston performance, and built plenty of modulars. i'm definitely familiar with them, tuning them, racing them, and i was doing so since '96. (i'm out of the industry now.) i never saw an oil related failure (except for oil starvation, which might still be some inherent oiling problem as i described earlier, but open-tracked modulars had a habit of blowing up unless the oil system was modified), so i can't tell you anything about what oils work best in them, because they all worked fine to me. i never even saw any oil pump breakages that were widely reported in the high hp cars, so i can't comment on that either.

i see nothing more concrete in your anecdotal evidence, even empirically it's not enough data, especially since we have evidence to the contrary. (that thick oils don't hurt modulars.) but you assert that a 10w30 should be more than enough, and i can't argue against that. ford would argue against that on the cobra R, but we don't have the full story there, i'll concede that.

again, i'm not trying to comment on the use of 15w40 vs 5w20, just trying to bring a saner view to the debate.

I personally think that modular motors can handle a lot more than just 20s and 30s.

There are several fleets (police departments and cab companies) that use 15w40 and 50s.

Personally, I wouldn't run 15w anything during MN/WI winters. I ran ATM 10w30 last winter and was alright though.

I think the whole, "My friend's cobra" thing is just a misunderstanding. There's a BIG difference between a Cobra and a Cobra R. The R was most recently made in 2000 (there had been a 93 and 95 too). To top it off, only 300 Rs were made in 2000.

Plenty of other vics/trucks/GM/etc use things well past 5w30s and 5w20s. So I don't think you'd have a problem with a 5w40 this winter and going up when spring hits next year.
 
another thing about the cougar, I tried different things, like starting the motor up just before going to bed when the motor was full cold, I would run the motor for 30 seconds then shut it off, next day or even two days later when i started it up the motor didn't knock or knocked very little. My conclusion was the oil drained down when it was hot, either the engine it'self and or the oil filter/pump. if the system was full of cold oil it didn't drain as fast or as much. I it appears to me that the Pennzoil Conventional 10w30 couldn't take the heat, and was sheared down to nothing, not good considering I mostly babied the car, and most miles were highway/interstate cruise set at 68 or 58 MPH

like I said above 15w40 was a idea for summer only, I wouldn't use it in winter, or when the temps start getting in the 30's at night very often
 
Michael SR - Shame on you for bringing real world experience and facts to this discussion. It is supposed to be "I think", "I heard", and "probably". That way we can all mislead each other with our "conjectures" and keep the thread going forever.
 
Last year when I purchased a personal Crown Vic Sport, I noticed the 3/4 second start-up knock, typical with the new race-start ECMs and 5W-20. I tried 5w30 M1 and is got worse. I went to Chevron 10w30 and the knock went away. I talked to my Police Department Fleet Maintenance Manager and we use Delo 15w40. This summer I have been running Delo 15w40 and my milage is the same as it was with 5W-20 Motorcraft and no start-up knock. I would also add that we have never "blown" a filter on any of our Police Vics.
 
is Delo conventional 15w40 oil or a syn.?
blown filters? what brand filters are they? maybe time for brand switch
