Which generation iPhone has the best camera? I'd be buying it for the camera, not to use as a phone. Thanks.

Best for what? The iPhone 12/13/14 Pro/Pro Max have LiDAR, which is handy for photogrammetry if your processing software (Pix4Dmatic for example) can utilize the data.

I thought the love for the old Nikon point & shoot was strange. I know your smarter than this Soft Cars.
I like the little Nikon, but it won't P&S in macro mode. I have to set the aperture and white balance manually, and it also needs a tripod in macro mode. I've heard that an iPhone has "anti-shake technology" which would give me the ability to shoot macro without a tripod.

Best for shooting welds in macro mode that's fully automatic.

What are your main subjects? For general photography purposes I'd get a Pixel phone. Google's processing produces the most pleasing colors, lighting, contrast IMHO.
My main subjects are 8 inch long welds. It would be nice to have a point and shoot macro camera that figures everything out for me.

I'd ask around a bit to see if you could try some iPhones or other current gen phones. You could even bring a sample to some phone stores.

The advantage of a smartphone camera is that it can be set to send pics to to the cloud automatically if you want easy peasy.
Sony makes the image sensor in iPhones. You can do so much better than an iPhone. Some cameras have built in wifi. Knowledge is power.

Android user? I've never had a cell phone in my life. And I don't know how to use one. :D

I use that dollar bill to tell me when I'm in focus; otherwise, I have no idea.

I have an iphone14. It takes great pics and is pretty versatile. I am partial to iPhone pic quality over android.

I am sure Samsung and Google also can take many awesome photos, but I am partial to iPhones.

Have you tried taking pictures of small objects such as a dollar bill? The reason why I ask is because I wanted to know if the iPhone is capable of getting the entire dollar bill in focus while taking up the entire frame. My camera can't do it.

Latest iPhone and latest Galaxy are probably the best phone cameras. There's no indication where you are but if you have a good camera store nearby you might go see what they have to say/offer. You might also research on a dedicated site like dpreview.com or similar.
