BEST engines.....

Nissan VQ30DE. a silky smooth sweet engine that is as bullet proof as they come. strong low end and high end power while getting 30+ mpg hwy.

oh, the song was about the ford 409.

Little GTO wasn't technically about the engine, but it did mention the 389 (of course with the three deuces and a 4-speed).

BMW M30, the "Big Six." Smooth, powerful, incredibly long-lived, advanced design (when first produced) but easy to service. The M10 four cylinder is a close second.

OK, I don't know about "BEST" but one engine that has had a great impact and longevity will be GM's SBC's. the 350 of old was a workhorse and easy to workover.

Jeep 4.0... heck yes... another one that comes to my head, the Ford 300 I6 and the Toyota 4 cyl that powered their pickup trucks and last gen 4 runner... that thing was a tank...

Truck - CAT 3406E or C15 (PreEGR) 1.25 milllion miles to overhall at 80,000 lb Gross. Detroit Series 60 is great but not as long lived.

Light Truck - 5.9 Cummins
Light Truck Gas - International 345/392, Scout 4 cyl, 20R/22R Toyota.

Car Diesel - Mercedes 3.0 I6 TD. Easy 500,000 mi

Gas Car Engines -
Slant 6 Chryslers (170,198,225).
BMW Big Six
M-B I6

2JZ-GTE is in a class all by itself!!! THeir are durable enignes then their is the 2JZ-GTE!! If they are left alone you would think it was a commercial diesel engine in terms or how many miles you can put on the thing!!! You still see the non turbo version motoring along in Cresida and old Celica Supra's were the body is almost see through but the engine still pulls strong!!!

Toyota 2UZ-FE, the 4.7 V8, the 20R and 22R Toyota 4-cyl engines, and my cousin's 84 1500cc Honda Civic, and maybe the 850 Volvo 5 cylinder.

Would a good question be, name the bad ones?

One engine was so great they made a song about it. Remember which one?

"She's real fine...
My 409...."
Best engine for me was in the Villager.. Nissan 3.0 liter. Smooth, practically maintenance free; a fine engine.

My cousin has a 94 buick with the 3800 series GM motor and he has 250,000 miles on it, it still runs good but it burns oil.

I have the 2.3L honda F23 motor in my accord and so far no problems. engine runs like new and uses no oil.

I've owned quite a few engines and these would be on my list as they are well running, quiet, do not need maintanence every other moment, don't leak/use oil and last a long time.

And get pretty good MPG for their size.

1.8l VW (in 86 jetta)

4.3l V6 (in a 96 Chevy truck)

2.4l I4 (98 Honda Accord)

1.8l 1zzfe (05 Corolla)

4.8l V8 (Chevy truck)

And so far I'm really liking the 3.5l V6 that is in my Dads Vue. Very nice engine! (and I know it will last a long time)

Take care, bill

The best Engine? From what aspect?

Anything that last at least double the life of other engines for the same time period. At least thats how I judge it.

300,000 mi 1960's Slant 6.
300,000 mi 1960's Int V8 and 4
400,000 mi 1970's BMW and MB
450,000 mi 1970's/1980's Toy 20R/22
600,000 mi MB TD
850,000 mi Cummmins 5.9
1.25 mil mi CAT 3406E (Okay only 50% over)

3.1L GM.. Yes, even with the intake leaks in potentially has, it is a durable engine if maintained and will well exceed 200K if it is not neglected.

I wouldn't call an engine the best if you have to crack the sucker open to replace gaskets in order for it to be reliable.

We lost a GM 4300 to an intake gasket - motor was toast. The other 2 we've had needed gaskets replaced.

I'd say these engines are big time P.O.S.es.

Actually, an intake gasket job costs no more than a timing belt on an import, and you don't have to open up the engine either.
For my experience the 2.5 "4 Tech was the best.

Some of my favorites are...

The Mitsubishi 4g37, not a very powerful engine, but hecka reliable and can take a TON of abuse! I had friends with base model 1st gen Eclipse's that thrashed them to death, but the engine still ran strong.

Also, the Mistubishi 4g63... An increadible engine with crazy power potential. As long as there's been an Evo, there's been a 4g63.

The Mazda BPD 1.8L engine... Nice little dohc motor with good power for it's size. I had a '94 Protege with this engine in it. Didn't burn a drop of oil via 5,000 mile oci's. The engine was great, but everything else in the car seemed to be falling apart.

But the engine I like the most right now is the Ford 4.6L V8. My dad has driven his '92 Grand Marquis for 15 years and the motor still runs like a champ. This influenced the purchase of my current car, 99 Vic and the engine seems to be doing very well so far. It's extremely smooth, reliable, and decent on gas. Ford has been confident enough to use it in a variety of their cars and trucks. The most awesome of which is in the new Mustang. I've read about Taxi cab drivers taking this engine to 300,000 or 400,000 miles and beyond w/out rebuild.

It's bizarre that someone said the Volvo I5 and no one else mentioned the Volvo I4 red blocks.

Listen - I've owned a Toyota 22RE. No way is it as stout as the the Volvo I4. I think people aren't really knowledgeable about the IRV motor and before (B16,B18, B20)up to the last offerings (B23FT).

My experience is mostly limited to Fords. Of those I can definitely say the following are great engines:

7.5L (460 cid) V8 Major gas hog though
5.0L (302 cid) V8 Good for any purpose, esp performance.
4.9L (300 cid) I6 Better than 5.0 V8 for heavy work.
3.0L V6 Weak on power, but runs forever and runs great.

FYI: The 5.0 V8 actually rounds to 4.9 L if you calc from actual bore and stroke figures, but surely Ford did not want two engines, both designated 4.9L and for sure 5.0 look much better on the fender of a Mustang than would 4.9.
