It's been a while since I read Frank's (creator of A-rx) on this subject, but the impression I came away with is that Frank (at least) implies that PAO's contribute to the process of sludge sticking to internal engine parts.

I think your just misunderstanding his warning. Using a PAO type synthetic chemistry, in Frank's opinion, might keep arx and the sludge it has trapped from dissolving or delaminating from the metal parts of the engine so that it can be caught in the filter.

It stifles the process. My take from Frank is that Auto-Rx works well enough with PAO synths ..but it's questionable how long to continue the process. 5k? 7k? It's just much simpler to use cheaper oils. I find it comical (sorta) looking at Frank's challenges from the outside looking in. If it's too short a process, people don't like doing too many oil changes and keeping track of the mileage. If you make it too long (like the current process), another segment doesn't like to wait that long. If you tell them to use cheap oils, some will insist on using Group IV oils and want a recommendation for how long.

What that means up to their sales staff, though.
Cleaners are for cleaning - oils are weak at this.
If you need dog food, get dog food.
If you have to feed your parrot, get parrot food.
Just went to the Pennzoil Platinum web site and all I can say that is one lofty claim 46% cleaning. I do know there are many BITOG members who are now PP converts and this oil is holding up favorably on UOA wear number etc.

Yes, but there are dozens if not hundreds of oils we've tried that hold up well and show good wear, that doesn't mean they clean.
