Belgian Castrol Edge 0w-30 A3/B4 SL ???

Not exactly the same, but here in Oz we get Australian Castrol Edge 5w30 A3/B4, it's also API SL as well as MB 229.5, BMW LL-01, VW 502 / 505.

Castrol Australia make a point of saying on their spec sheet, that it passes all the quality requirements of a SN oil, but due to it's Zinc / Phos levels, it is required to be classified as a SL oil.

I'm sure your Belgium Castrol is much the same.

I don't know the exact levels, but an ILSAC 30 grade oil typically has about 800 ppm Zn, but the SL Edge here has about 1000 ppm Zn, so about 25% richer. Which I like.

Don't forget the restricted Zinc / Phos levels for SN only applies to ILSAC grades (xW20 & xW30) so many of the Euro 40 grade oils also have about 1000 ppm Zn, but being a 40 they are allowed to claim SN and so fly under most people's radar.

So if I understand correctly the main concern with higher zinc or phosphorous is shortened catalytic converter lifespan ?

BUT it's an API SL oil , so does this spell trouble for any newer (2010+) engines ??

THANKS

No issues whatsoever. SL is still current certification and API is not stringent that much.
MORE importantly is that oil meets ACEA A3/B3 B4, MB 229.5, VW 502.00 and BMW LL-01 which is now most stringent gas engine specification.
I would use it in Ecoboost like all the time if you can find it on sale. I used exhaustively that oil in my VW's (Passat B5.5 1.8T, CC 2.0T, and Tiguan 2.0T). It is probably best oil I have ever used in those cars. However, price does not justify purchase since Castrol 0W40 is $25 for 5qt jug in Wal Mart and it is same formula.

In theory, yes. Only if you're burning oil though, and it's not really that much more where it'd make any real world difference. 1000ppm vs. 800ppm. If you're burning oil it will give your cat problems regardless eventually. As stated, it's SL because of the 800ppm cap on SN. I also got a large amount of this for $2qt. at AZ last year. I'd have no problem running it in a new car.

Well I may end up driving back there (about 45mins away) and buy all they've got because on paper at least it looks great.

I'm actually sitting on a 5qt jug of Mobil 1 0w-40 "Euro" based on an exchange we had.

For some reason I can't find a good local source of ow-40 Castrol Edge. (been to Wal-Mart and the 4 local parts supply chains)

Was thinking of holding off on the Mobil 1 0w-40 until April and going lighter with next change early NOV. for the "winter" season.

Exactly, it's only a problem for the cat, and only if you are burning significant amounts of oil.

My car's oil level sits at the full mark for the whole of it's OCI, I haven't topped up in years. I have no concerns running 1000 ppm Zn oil.

Another person may be running 800 ppm iLSAC & SN oil and topping up with 1 Qt every 3,000 miles, they are putting more Phos in their cat than I am.

Go on Walmart's website and have it shipped to your closest store. It's on rollback too.

P.S. any MSDS into on this any where ?
