Battery Charger Testing Results

Let us know what you think of the 450. I’ve been getting good results using a Pulsetech once or twice a week with the 2012s doing most of the heavy lifting.

FYI, Amazon currently has the XC450 for $59.50 with free shipping (for Prime members).
Actually anyone gets free shipping on that item, (Prime members get next day delivery)...but you also have to pay state and local sales taxes. The $59.50 price is their price floor these are offered on Amazon (it goes up and down every few weeks). Same on the Pulse Tech website. The $49.50 price on the Pulse Tech website was the absolute lowest price they have offered it in recent memory. With no tax, and a "flat rate" shipping of $12.45, made it a great deal when buying two or more units. I snagged two to try out. $55.73 net, delivered cost each. Mine are supposed to arrive tomorrow, Saturday.

Next day?

Says arrives 21 May if I order now. Same if using a L48 address.

Granted 5 days is pretty darn quick. Used to be 7-10 days for Prime.

Do you have Prime? Mine says "FREE delivery Tomorrow, May 17"
Yes.

Must depend on location. It's generally 5-7 days.

Yup. If I plug in your zip code, then it changes to May 21.
Or could be depend on which of the Amazon warehouses stock it. The ad claims they ship from the Amazon warehouse, but probably not stocked in all of them. I ordered direct from Pulse Tech which is located in TX.

I paid $69 for the 450 and the 400 and don’t regret it. Saving money would have been nice but it’s really one of the best deals out there for what you get.

Why is the newer 450 cheaper than the older 400?
My guess would be that the 450 isn’t quadlink compatible and there’s no % guage on charging status. The 450 has more features and from what I’ve tracked, has the same algorithm. I’ve had the 450 on my agm and the 400 on my flooded battery all week. My 2012s have been showing a “load” error everytime I open a car door and it’s getting annoying.

That and not having an auto restart is a big one. The 450 seems like a great charger for someone who tends to it and actually pays attention. The 400 is much more of a workhorse.

Doesn't look like it.

For similar price, one could get the Pro-Logix 2310 which can charge faster, has LCD display, and does have temperature compensation.

From my experience with various battery tenders going on 20 years, and recent experience the past couple years exchanging information on this forum...I am finding the temperature compensation is probably not as important as a properly functioning desulfation mode.
Nor is speed really important, as we are using these to maintain, not recharge batteries (depends on your use, but seems most are maintaining, not charging a discharged battery). I have Battery Minders with 2,4, and 8 amp settings and they recommend the lowest setting as best for maintenance. "low and slow" is apparently optimal for charging. Battery Minder says use 4 amp for maintaining multiple batteries and reserve the 8amp setting for Odyssey batteries, using the special "Odyssey" setting.

I'm curious if the Pro Logix "conditioning" phase works adequately to reduce and prevent sulfation. The LCD display of charging voltage is definitely a plus. But you can install a bluetooth monitor to track and log that information easily. They are only $15 and give other information as well, such as cranking voltage and alternator voltage and idle and at higher rpms. (data logger). Also, the larger 10amp and above Pro Logix by virtue of their higher output, do not allow the use of SAE ring connectors for easy connection for battery maintenance. Only comes with clamps permanently attached. Opening hoods frequently will wear and break the cables over time...I have had to replace the hood cables on one of my BMWs three times. I have SAE pig tails on all my cars now.

From my personal experience, the Battery Minder desulfation clearly works effectively...if a bit slow. It can take up to two months to gradually restore a sulfated battery. Granite Digital "save a battery" claims a similar "pulse" desulfation during float, but clearly did not work for me.

The Pulse Tech has good feedback from several users here that the desulfation mode works quickly, in as short as a few days to restore a sulfated battery. I've ordered a couple of them and look forward to see if they are as effective or more effective than the Battery Minder.

I have the pro logix and it’s buried at the bottom of my rotation box. Not that it’s bad, it’s just kind of blah. I like the way Pulsetech pulverizes a battery and how battery minder can stay on top of things for days and is uneventful. Not much of an endorsement, but my cars always end up 100% charged.

And they don’t with the pro logix?

At least it gives a voltage readout!
