Backing into parking spaces

Over the last number of monthsI've observed many people backing their vehicles into parking spaces where people have been parking head first forever. Often they block traffic while performing the parking maneuver.

Anyone know the reason folks are backing into parking spaces in greater and greater numbers?

I haven't noticed an increase. I have noticed people doing a U-turn directly into an angled spot on the other side of the street . Does the backing in maneuver take more time than the backing out maneuver after parking?

I have noticed it also. I assume in a gene mutation in the DNA

I sometimes back in but typically when no one is around and parking lot pretty empty.

Typically with my truck I park at the end of rows where it's really empty and then just pull through when leaving.

They have back in angled parking in downtown Austin, Tx and I think its asinine. When people are positioning [especially large vehicles] they get there front ends over into the second lane. And they take forever doing it. Not safe at all. SMH

It is a critical thinking exercise.

Backing into a space allows one to control the movement. Backing out of a space one doesn't control the movement. It is generally much easier to back into a space, and later drive forward out of a space, than the opposite.

Of note a high percentage of BITOGers park at the end of the parking lot, so no reason to worry about either method.

Yes when driving for work, they advise us to do this, as it is a bit safer.

This, and it’s also safer to pull forwards out of a parking space, rather than reversing.

I hate backing into spaces. I do remember it being the way to do it for Tesla Superchargers since they all have short cables to limit the resistance (and amount of liquid cooling). I prefer to park head in if there's a long charging cable. I do remember seeing a few head in Tesla Superchargers, including at least one that was pull-through.

I'll vote "back up cameras". Backing up, they can probably see the two lines better than driving forward--often the lines disappear due to the body lines--heck I notice it in my Corolla--but I can see quite better where those lines are in the camera.

I agree. My 16 year old grandson always backs his truck into a parking space. His back up camera is his guide.

Correct.

This comes up here every few months it seems like.

On 90 degree spaces backing in is better. I’ve done it for a decade now. Where I work it’s actually company policy for insurance reasons, although i don’t drive for the company very often anymore I just got used to doing it and so I do it in my personal vehicles too.

Now that I have a Tesla with the charging port is in the rear it makes even more sense to back in everywhere. Sometimes I use Auto Park for fun even though I can back in faster myself usually.

I never back in.

It’s always aggravating waiting for people to try 3 times back and forth trying to back in while everyone else is trying to drive through the parking lot.

And seeing people load trucks and car trunks at the grocery store after they’ve backed in is hilarious.

I also have this thing called a neck, where I can pivot my head to see where I’m backing up, along with mirrors, a backup camera, backup sensors, and it’ll even hit the brakes if something comes by.
