Avocadoes by the pound

Love avocados, but they're awfully expensive most of the time unless there's some sort of sale. I think I found six medium (#4046) for $2 once, but that was a special deal that required a supermarket coupon.

I've been going a lot to this specialty supermarket. This place has a lot of closeout produce. I bought stuff like 7 large (#4225) avocados or 2+ pound bags of white mushrooms for $1.79. The mushrooms don't necessarily look the greatest but were fine to eat. The avocados were all perfectly ripe when I bought them, but after a few days the remaining ones were starting to dehydrate.

I can't always find the closeout avodcadoes, but now they have prebagged California "pee wee" Hass avocados. I saw $1.39 on a sign and thought it was per bag. I checked out and I think it was $2.80 and I asked and saw it was per pound. Still a good price though. Most bags had an assortment of sizes. Just really tiny. I weighed a few on a kitchen scale and they weigh as little as 0.06 pounds to about 0.2 pounds. Also a variety of ripeness in the same bag, so some might be ready to eat while others were green and hard.

They've been really good. They taste about the same as bigger avocados and the pits tend to be really small too. The only problem I have is that the skin seems to be thinner and often breaks when I'm trying to scoop out the flesh. I've also seen Trader Joe's selling prebagged "Teeny Tiny" avocados, but they're not really very small.

I don't think I've ever seen avocados sold by the pound. In my area, avocados typically run anywhere from $1/ea to $2.50/ea, with 3/$5 being pretty typical.

Like you, I love avocado, but it is hard to justify when they are so pricey.

88 cents here at walmart. There OK, a bit small.

My regular grocery there about $2 a piece, although they are bigger.

That's about $3-4 a pound, but it would depend on the actual size. Any size is going to include a wide range anyways. It was disappointing when I sliced one open and it looked like half the weight was the pit. I also cut them open with a butter knife. If they're ripe I don't need a sharp knife.

I'll weigh them next time. $4 a pound sound reasonable, no?

There always green / rock hard. I have to let them sit on the counter for a week. Lots of planning ahead. There really not my thing, but my family loves them, or I wouldn't be bothered.

I like 'em enough but Mrs. Kira adores them.
The prices fluctuate wildly.
I'm actually surprised that I never weighed them whole then with the skin and pit removed.
I'm also surprised that I never bought a bag of the undersized ones and weighed them as above, to compare price per yielded pound.

Hmmm...I guess I can't scold people who fail to chart their fuel mileage anymore.

These are nonstandard sized, so I'm thinking by the pound is the only practical way to sell them. I don't even think there's a PLU for anything that small. I took a photo of the smallest ones along with one of the bigger ones. I had a teaspoon out to more or less give it the scale. Right now the green ones seem to be ready in a couple of days because of higher temps. I might also put them together where the green ones ripen faster exposed to the ripe ones. I'm guessing the ripe ones outgas ethylene like bananas and tomatoes.
