Average new car price is $50K ? Insanity.

we consumers are blindly paying a lot for new cars

When was the last time the majority of people were “cognitively underdeveloped”? Most of the time, most of the people are of herd mentality. That in US corporations invest hundreds of billions of dollars to normalize abnormal consumption - yes, that’s true, and that sucks. Just like “live to work” is a predominant mentality here vs “work to live”.

But reining in corporations is considered communist and anti business, so - “reap what you saw” 🤷🏻‍♂️

I should have kept my first car from 1968. Think of all the money I would have saved.
Here's my '68
68 new top side.webp

They might be the low trim levels though. Personally I need the luxury of soft leather seats, sun roof, heated seats, Navigation screen, DVD screen for the middle and rear row passengers, highest safety ratings from IIHS, outside temperature on the dashboard, etc.
Nobody NEEDS all that stuff...

As long as there are people with more money (or that have access to it) than sense, there will be used cars to be had. My days of buying new are long gone, unless something changes to drastically reduce new vehicle prices...

You guys just don't understand the concept of driving a new vehicle every three years or so with very little cash outlay due to equity from your trade. Usually-those of use that can do this have made dollars in our career and have a lot of common sense, It's a want-not a need.

Some of use have no desire to drive a vehicle to 200,000 miles-or more. OR-cruise the online CoPart listings to see where an insurance company made a mistake and trying to revive a vehicle deemed totaled from a collision.

I knew a guy who was doing that years ago.

At one point he was making payments on his current vehicle AND the two he owned prior.

I'm guessing you'd be absolutely disgusted with my 433K mile Corolla...

I like the idea, but the numbers don't seem to work out for me? Like almost double the cost/year to running them down to $5k value in 10-12 years. I guess I try to choose relatively simple cars that I can do any straight part swapping repairs on most of it, but if you don't want to get your hands dirty on a more complex car, then I guess it kind of works out?

Apples and oranges...

Well, I’m pretty sure many old timers that built this country without having electricity and running water in their house would say exactly the same, what you said about car equipment: “nobody NEEDS that stuff”. If they managed to built a country without electricity and running water, perhaps they are right? So from their perspective, YOU don’t “NEED” electricity (candles) and running water (well) in the same way you say someone “doesn’t NEED” soft leather, cooled seats, and a freeway autopilot aid.

Word of the day: “perspective”

And by the way: apples and oranges are both fruits and both grow on trees, and so on — so they are comparable 😉

Your point may have been valid 150 years ago, but not today...

It's like this. There has been a multitude of anti-new car posts recently. Mainly it's a price discussion or a debt discussion. As we all know who are regulars on this forum-acquisition of new beater posts have ground to a halt. My take-is there is a lot of pent of frustration of those who wish to upgrade their beater-who can't or won't pay the pricing for used vehicles that have gone up dramatically. I can't imagine anybody happy driving a Corolla with 400,000 miles on it. Bit then again-I could be wrong.

Perhaps, you might be lagging (and I don’t mean this in a disrespectful way) behind on some of your views on what is “needed”? Somehow we have arrived from “150 years ago” to “today” and it did not happen overnight

I traded in a truck with a heated steering wheel for one without. I really miss the heated steering wheel....

I understand you! I live in 4 seasons. Through late autumn, winter and early-mid spring, I get in a car, turn it on and it’s left on until I’m out of the car. Fingers get more susceptible to cold compared to the rest of the body (which is also dressed). With a heated steering, I don’t need a heater blowing at my core (thus overheating it) to warm my hands. I just channel it at my feet, where the toes are more susceptible to cold… 🙂. Yes, a “luxury”, but so is electricity

I concur with your observation. I’m also not against, per ce, the b**ching about used cars becoming less affordable, or dumb people employing questionable finance options to acquire a 12 year old “Chevy equinox” or something, but I think the “Luddite” layer of the said b**ching deserves to be challenged, sometimes strongly, even if the proponent has a full right to express it
