I agree, I'd want something to dislove that junk a bit more. That stuff looks like it can clog a lifter real easy.
 
I always did a MolaSoak prior to engine clean-up (plus fresh spark plugs, etc), and then a HD dose of LUBE CONTROL LC-20 on a fairly short OCI. Then the ARX regimen with 30W dino and best oil filter. Mine were never so bad as that picture, but two were more than twenty years old (short mile daily drivers). The LC did a good pre-clean, and the ARX did the rest (since 2003).

I, too, would want to do some mechanical cleaning on that motor.

OP, how far into the cleaning phase are you? How long are you going to run the ARX?

Agree...hotter the oil, better that particular type of Ester works.

I plan to run it to 4k and begin a rinse...

Hopefully the ARX can do some things for you, those deposits seem quite "baked" in. Either way, once you're done with the ARX phases, I would stick with HDEO(like Rotella) for awhile. That should help continue to clean it. Also, some MMO 500-1000 miles before your oil change.

I wasn't trying to be funny. Some people take, or like to see before and after pictures to show results, good, bad, or none. Nothing funny about that. Especially when they're on the fence about trying something that costs a lot more than a competitors product used to clean up an engine.
 
He (Brad Armstrong) has been promoted to consultant (insultant) now. and after 15 years here we have knocked the [censored] out of him, and of course 'the pictures'. There's hope for you yet!
