Wow, that sounds nasty. If I owned a Hyundai I would only be using there filters. Does the 2.4 Have a positive displacement oil pump?

K&N had no say if they were the ones being bought out.

Bought out by who? ... I don't think K&N were bought out. It was my understanding that Champion Labs manufactured filters for K&N ... then Fram bough Champ Labs. Even so, K&N could have still allowed the filters to be made at the same facility under Fram ownership. But apparently that didn't happen for some reason, and I'm assuming that K&N found another supplier to manufacture their filters. That's why I said Fram and K&N apparently couldn't make a "deal".

Fram did not buy Champ Labs. Some people here get confused because the new company is named Fram Filtration.

Crash course:
An organization called the Rank Group bought the parent of Champ Labs. The Rank Group then bought Fram. The Rank Group then combined both filter companies into a new organization and Rank named the new organization Fram Filtration. I assume they chose that name because Fram has more name recognition than Champ.

There are quite a few threads with more info and links to articles on the topic if you search. I don't have time to dig them up right now.

From my observation, the "oil filter causing knocking" issue is common for Hyundai/Kia's GDI 4 cylinder engines. THe older previous generation of engines does not seem to be affected by this.

The "cheapest" filter I have used for my car was a driveworks filter and I had absolutely zero problems with that filter. I went through two filters since I had those stashed from oil+filter combo sales.

I would just stick with OEM whenever possible, or a decent name brand filter. Purolator classics are just as good You can buy them in bulk off ebay cheaper than aftermarket filters.

My mom's car (2013) has the 2.4 4cyl I use baldwin or purolator filters on it and have never experienced the knock. Car runs great.

One good experience with the NAPA/WIX filter on my KIA 2.4. In the future I'll use only the OEM filter...money isn't a concern with 7500 mile oil changes, and the 10 year warranty is a concern.

Keep in mind that the engine makers do not publish the specs for their oil filters. The filter makers reverse engineer the OEM filters, then usually find an existing filter in their catalog that they feel is close enough to cover that OEM listing. That aftermarket oil filter catalog listing might be close enough, or maybe not quite close enough.

To add to Stephen's informative posting, the Rank Group is a private investment group from New Zealand. We don't know the criteria for K&N's oil filter contracting. Their motorcycle oil filters have been made by HiFloFiltro in Thailand for years.

Had this problem on MULTIPLE cars, engines, even had trouble with OE replacement filters vs factory. Suzuki, Toyota, NIssan mainstream motors.
Lot of junk filters out there and some "overtly sensitive" girly engines too, happy to bypass their mains pressure away for economy gains. Could also postulate the oiling problem is magnified given the filters are sized too small!
Yes they are, Buddy.
Proof is in the pudding.
