Audi S4 Oil Help

I have read this forum for awhile now and there are so many different opinions about oils. I'm amazed that there isn't some sort of ranking process by now.

Here's my problem/question.

I have an Audi S4 and have narrowed down my selections to Amsoil and Redline. But I can't decide on 5w-40w or 0w-30w. I've also read the reviews about the different versions of the oils like the 2000 and 3000 Amsoil.

Could I get some opinions about positives and negatives for both these oils and perhaps some recommendations.

I also have an older Audi 1988 80 and a 2000 Subaru Outback that I'd like good oils for.

I don't mind paying the extra bucks for a good oil because I figure that it pays off in maintenance and longevity of the engine.

I'm also considering gear box oils. I'll look over in that forum.

the oil id run is either the amsoil 5w-40 or my preference GC (german Castrol) 0w-30. and you could even try the dealer used (and avial now at autozone) Belgian made castrol syntec 5w-40.

Thanks Christopher.. I realize that everyone has there opinions and prefer something different than the next guy. Do you have any evidence or experiences to back up you recommendations. I appreciate.

Which year is your S4?

Whether you have the 2.7T biturbo V6 or the 4.2 V8 could make a difference in recommendatons.

I have a 2000 S4 it's a biturbo 2.7

Given the lube requirements of all three cars (particularly the older Audi), I'd run the Amsoil 5w-40 year round. This is particularly true if the old Sube is also a turbo.

If you only had the S4 and it was the 2.7L, biturbo, I'd go with the Series 2000, 0w-30. I've seen excellent results with that engine/oil combo and the S2000 also works very well in my 1.8L, 225 Hp Audi TT roadster.

I wouldn't run the Redline 5w-40 if you decide to go that route, since it's too thick to give you the best performance. I'd run the Redline 5w-30 or 10w-30 instead in the new Audi and Subaru and reserve the 5w-40 to use in the old Audi 80.

I agree... Amsoil 5w-40, series 2000 0w-30, GC 0w-30, or, M1 truck & SUV / Delvac 1 5w-40 would be my choices.

Only UOA can tell for sure what works best for YOUR climate, driving style, usage profile, etc. All else is just guessing, and only worth as much as a guess.

All oils will work excellently though; no worries of degradation or falling to an improper grade even in this power-dense engine.

TooSlick is correct, IMHO; Amsoil S2000 0w30 is an excellent choice. Other choices are M1 0w40, or GC 0w30. I prefer the GC and run it in my allroad.

As lighter oils remove heat better, I would tend to stay away from the 5w40 or heavier oils. Turbos need cooling, and lots of it. And the cooling lines, even after the revision in '00-'01, are not all that large.

Or, I could be wrong.

I think that GC might be best solution as well. I am putting it into my S4 in a week or two..Just finishing Auto RX cycle...

I was wondering if any S4 owners dared to use Redline 5W-20 and what could we expect from using that oil?

I mean it has pretty decent HTHS of 3.3...and if it keeps oil temp down it would probably run as a 30wt?
