ATF+4 Application

Can ATF+4 be used in the old 727 and/or in GM Turbo 400? Is there a reason not to use ATF+4 in these applications?

These transmissions were designed to run on Dexron and that's what should be used in them.

+4 has additives that are not necessary in a 727.

An old speed trick in the 727 is to use type F in place of Dextron. The shifts become noticeable, but not harsh by any means. I have done it for years with no problems whatsoever. On the plus side, the transmission shifts much better and will last longer due to less slipping.

I remember when my dad had the fluid changed the first time in our 66 New Yorker and the shop put in Type F fluid. The shifts were very noticeable and dad hated it. He took it back and made them put the correct fluid in.

I use Type F in all my 727's and 904's.No problems using that.I'm not keen on the ATF+4 in the 727..you can use the Dexron/Mercon in the older 727 trans with no problems

Most people who aren't performance oriented prefer the inperceptable shifts of most factory settings. The smoothness is accomplished at the expense of longevity and performance. Most people today who own muscle cars of the era prefer the instant solid shifts obtained through valve body adjustments and type F fluid in the case of a 727/904.
