Any opinions or experience with ASUS monitors?

I've been presented with an opportunity to spend OPM*, and it would that require a couple of monitors be purchased.

Looking at 20" widescreen units. Considering the ASUS VE205T. Directron is selling them for $119, ASUS includes a three year warranty.

Thoughts?

* = of course, Other People's Money.

From the ones I have seen, the Acer monitors looked a lot better at the same price point. We have some 22 and 24 inch Acers and they look pretty good.

The ASUS ones are more reliable and have a better warranty than the ACER monitors in my experience.

I'd say go for it. The only ones I like more are the Philips ones.

If you're buying a bunch for work I'd go for it. I think real estate trumps quality unless you do games or graphical work.

If it's for home, I just got a 23" 1080p from dell for less than 150 with an HDMI port. I have a 20 at work (1050x1650), and 1920 is a lot wider than 1650 pixel~wise. Height wise, 1080 obviously isn't much bigger than 1050.

Right now, they're using 17" Dell CRT monitors that were manufactured in 2001 or 2002.

*Anything* is going to look better than what they're using now...

I remember the good old days, when we bought about three dozen MAG 17" CRT monitors. Then, after several months of use, one after another would make a loud popping noise, quit, and then stink up the office.

It seemed like we always had 2-3 sitting around that were dead, waiting to be sent back to MAG for repair, and another 2-3 that were at MAG being repaired. As we'd get one back that had been repaired, we'd unpack it, pack another dead one in the same box and packaging, and send it back to MAG. Usually the repaired ones were more reliable... but being more reliable than "terrible" isn't much to brag about.

We started tracking them by serial number, and after one had been repaired twice, we'd toss it. After that, we started buying Viewsonics.

Best CRT monitor that I ever bought was a Iiyama Vision Master 17" CRT. Actually, it still works and is still being used. The image was incredibly crisp for a CRT.

I'm trying to convince myself to buy a monitor. But the 42" LED TV works really well as one. (Was using a 32" LCD.)

Among the gaming, or sort of general use PC users, ASUS monitors seem to be well liked especially for the bang for your buck. My next display will likely be an ASUS as Viewsonic has really let me down a bit with the most recent one I bought.

For photo super-accurate-color-nazi types they may not be quite as good as the much more expensive "professional" oriented displays.

I love the ASUS VW224U 22 inch I bought in March of 09. Much better than the ViewSonic VX1932wm I replaced when it dies after less than 2 years use and the (very) cheap 17 inch Acer that the ViewSonic replaced.

Heh...

Just noticed that the ASUS VE208T is just $5 more than the VE205T at NewEgg.

The main difference that I can see is that the VE208T is an LED, and the contrast ratio is double of the VE205T.

That would be an extra $5 that is well spent.

I have a 22" Asus I've been using for a couple years now. It works great for my needs. I've always been a fan of Asus products, and this monitor is no exception.

I like the ones we have at work, the VE205T and the 24" model that I cannot for the life of me remember the model number of. I personally am happy with my LG W2240T hat I picked up when it was on sale. Though I kinda am lookinag at the 23" Dell LED monitor for $230 with a little bit of longing but hey, I upgraded from a 17" LG 4:3 monitor so really just about anything is better than that.

I'd say you would be perfectly fine with the ASUS monitor, they make great stuff, though I would be curious to know who's panel it is.

Since there was only $5 difference in the two, I bought a VE205T and a VE208T. It appears that ASUS builds them in the same case, so they'll appear to be identical otherwise.

I'll put them both on the same computer, side by side, and set them up using an extended desktop. I'll see if the uneducated eye can detect any difference in the two.

If there's little difference, it was only a $5 experiment. It's just incredible, the prices on these monitors... just $250 for the two.

With a widescreen format I wouldn't go any smaller than 22 in minimum. 23 or 24 preferably. Anything smaller doesn't have enough height to show a full page and you always have to scroll around.

I like the picture on the ASUS models better than some of the Dell Premium Panels. I have one and my only complaint is the lack of USB ports on the side.
