I officially got diagnosed with asthma 2 days ago...
it's not fun, throat/chest feels tight, wheezing, cough etc... (mostly at night) I don't have it real bad, but enough to get meds now:
doc wants me to try Albuterol inhaler first and if I end up using it > 3 nights/week, i have to strat Advair.(maintenance med)

[censored]! it's really annoying feeling tight/tickly in throat all the time and wheezing etc.

I think cold air & dust are my triggers...my mom has it, too.

Hey I have had asthma for 25 years and have not been held back by it. Advair is a wonder drug and works well. The big thing is getting a hold of your allergy triggers, as asthma is very tied into allergies.

97 - Modern air filters in the home, and diet changes can fix or attenuate many new onset asthma sufferers.
I have an aversion to dust mites and mold - instant 1/8 lung capacity.

While genetic predisposition may well be the main reason, don't discount other factors, like autoimmune disorders and environmental conditions. Obviously, being in the field in which you are, you are aware of what to do about those factors.

Also be advised that stress can be a psychosomatic cause for asthma onset. I am sure, you are still burning the candle at both ends at school, so you may want to consider the effect on your health and see how you can slow down a bit. Even if it doesn't help, it certainly won't hurt!

As for longterm steroid use, even if only inhaled, I don't have to tell you it's really a much less than ideal solution.
