Argh what's wrong with my brakes?

The front brakes on my Liberty squeal extremely loud when I drive around, as soon as I press on the brake pedal though, the squeal goes away, let go of pedal, squeal comes back.

Also by turning the steering wheel side to side I can quiet or enhance the squealing. Sounds like it's mainly coming from the front passenger brake.

What could be the issue? I had all 4 brakes serviced 7k km ago(rotors, pads, fluid).

What kind of brakes pads were used? And were the rotor's replaced or machined?

Shims on the pads. I suspect the pads are vibrating in the caliper and when you apply the brakes, they stop moving, thus, they stop squeeking.

Mopar pads from Chrysler, don't know what material they are made out of though. Not sure about the rotors, I'd have to check the report. See the brakes were done by the dealer in August of 09 before I bought my Jeep from them(used).

Hmmm anyway for me to check/fix that? When it comes to brakes I'm pretty clueless.

Maybe the wear indicator got detached from the pad.

Could be defective factory pads. It could be the tech didn't clean up the caliper, and apply high temp grease where it was supposed to be applied.

Take it back and ask them to review their work.

I did take it back about a month ago. They went over the brakes, suspension components and steering components. Couldn't find anything wrong. I feel like going to a different dealer...unless it's something I can easily fix myself.

Do you know if the dealer used anti-squeal compound (Brake Quiet, etc.) on the back of the pads?

Good question! many don't bother for some odd reason, [censored] sometimes they don't even bother greasing the caliper pins. I had a similar situation last week on an 04 Escalade ESV. Brake squeal while driving, depress the pedal and it would go away then come back. His issue was cheap brake pads with no anti squeal compound on the backs of them (I do realize that some brake component manufacturers state that it is not needed... most cases it will be every time) . But that was not the only issue. The other problem is that the tech who did the job had not replaced the hardware (I'm talking about that thin piece of stainless steel between the brake pad saddles and the brake pads). What had take place was corrosion had built up underneath the thin plates and squeezed the pads just enough so they would not slide freely. Well think about it, those pads are going to be in slight constant contact at all times. Harder to apply and will not release completely.

The repair was simple, replace the pads with semi ceramic, clean the corrosion out from underneath the hardware, some anti squeal compound on the backs of the pads, now everything moves freely with NO brake noise. (Also had to lube the caliper pins because the flat rate guy didn't want to I'm guessing. Oh and find two wheel nuts he forgot to put on

)

Is it under warranty still? There are many things it could be. Is it coming from both sides? Do you have an itemized list of what they replaced or did they just orally tell you?

this could be the little brake wear sensor tab doing it's job correctly.
If not,simply applying brake anti squeal sauce to the back of the pads should fix it.

Don't mean to sound like a noob, but how to I take apart the brakes in order to troubleshoot this issue?

I do have the FSM for my Liberty, I guess it says in there how to troubleshoot...never thought about looking in the FSM lol. I'll check it out...
