Are you for or against Data Centers?

I would like to know what the real reason is behind this massive push for all these new data centers. AI is already up and running without a thousand more data centers so what is really behind this push? We know they aren't profitable and never will be so it's not a long term business decision except for the ones taking all the money up front. They aren't good for the environment or the tax payers wallet plus the electric grid can't support them all. Something is missing in the big picture.
AI's reach is about as sophisticated now as a "horseless carriage" and its associated manufacturing was 100 years ago. More and more and more and more will be built to accommodate more and more and more demand. This is just the tiny tip of the iceberg; it's still awkward and cumbersome and use-limited, like a 100-year old horseless carriage; or an early flying machine.

I thought no politics on this BITOG social platform? Quoting a disturbing political statement despicable rapist and socialist militia member (post #232) who was charged with treason? Uggg. I'm not a staff member and don't make the rules so I guess it's ok for longtime members here?

I'm a new member around here. So even though I have read the rules I'm finding some double standard cases where longtime members are given a pass for free speech involving politics.

I do apologize in advance if the member did not realize the meaning or author of the meme. I would respectively ask for the disturbing post to be taken down and in return will remove this post as well.
I’m guilty of breaking the rules occasionally, occasionally with consequences, just understand the kinder gentler bitog understands emotions are high but don’t be surprised if a thread gets shut or mod edit/notifications happen.

Fearless leader can still pull out the hammer

All the local data centers where I live are zoned in such a way to be located in predominantly industrial areas. Also a good percentage of them have their own dedicated power source so as to not disrupt communities. They are not a bother to me at all.

I totally get it and definitely am not reporting anyone.

There were no politics in my post. Just because you don't like it, or feel offended by it, doesn't mean it's against the rules.

The post that you quoted, it is a famous quote from 1984 by George Orwell.

I didn't get why he posted it, but I don't know how it is disturbing, political, rapist, socialist, or treason?

You realize 1984 is a novel - ie fiction - and required reading in most public schools yes?

The Meme itself is very political and the author is an extremist.

I researched and wrote a critical analysis and thesis about the man in my undergraduate years of english literature. Very sickening human to say the least. I cannot bring myself to even mention his name.

That's your, heavily biased opinion. If a quote from a fictional book gets you in such an outrage, then you should perhaps not participate in the thread.

It's not just politics. There's more than one example of selective moderation on this site.

I see that more and more here. It's a bummer but not much one can do. It is very puzzling as to why a convicted criminal and rapist quotes are allowed here.

No outrage here and there are no opinions of mine posted. My analysis was entirely evidence based. It's one of the few papers I was very proud of and got an A+/100%. In fact the professor really helped me through the semester after that paper. Very unfortunate that someone will knowingly quote something like this yet has no clue as to the authors agenda.

I just read through the entire George Orwell wikipedia article and found no mention of rape or crime. I would suggest maybe you start promoting your thesis on wikipedia instead of the BITOG thread on data centers??

Yes, and the "convicted criminal" was drunk and disorderly in order to experience the London jails first hand for a book he was writing.

But don't let facts get in the way.

Wikipedia? It is a tool for only a broad generalization.

I spent hours of institutional archiving, index cards, library and hierarchical modeling (among other forms of fact checking) long before sources such as "Wikipedia". How kids do it these days I really don't have a clue. In the 70's and 80's we still did research the old fashion way. Almost always peer reviewed and were for the target audience.

I really think this thread is not your anti-George Orwell soapbox, man

Yeah it's cool. Point taken. My original questioning the political and disparaging posts that are allowed here went over the heads of a few members here. I politely asked the member remove his post and he refused to do so. I see how it works. So very unfortunate it has to be this way.

Orwell obviously had an insight because many of the things he described in his books have either come true or are in the works. To have such insight he had to belong to a certain club and be initiated. So the guy probably did questionable things. That doesn’t take away from the fact that his book was very insightful, too insightful to be just a work of fiction and imagination IMO.

AI use will enable many things he described in his books, especially in 1984. So not sure where you’re getting politics from other than perhaps you don’t want people discussing this author or his works, hence the political claim to delete the posts or shut down the thread.

My problem with data centers is what is being spent/consumed to produce something that we don't know will be needed in the future at such scale. Incredible amounts of money is being spent, daily disruptions being caused to communities, resources being committed, and more all to provide compute capacity to meet current "demand". However, like with all technologies, as AI becomes more and more refined, the compute demand is expected to fall substantially. In other words, a part of the progression of AI models is an increase in power efficiency, which will render the vast amounts of compute capacity we built up obsolete. It's Moore's law on steroids, and precisely why what companies are doing with the depreciation tables for their GPUs makes no sense.

Another issue I have with this is trying to figure out why we need to force feed this extremely rapid and costly development for AI right now? Why not just let technological development happen naturally? Before anyone says it, no. China is not truly at risk at "overtaking" us in AI development. The only reason they're even competitive now is because they've made models that are so much more efficient than what we have developed, which actually proves my point. I love this graph. I'd love to see where everyone thinks we currently are as depicted on the graph.

Also, don't fear building them WAY out of town. I hear they're ugly.

We just successfully rejected one in the very rural area where I live (TG)
Let's keep them in the ugly urban areas, where they belong. Nothing scenic to ruin there anymore. The rural areas are the last unmolested lands in America.

I'm hoping this will play out like the Internet boom did. Money was thrown around like it was dirt......then it all came to an abrupt end leaving a huge shift in wealth but a LOT of jobs vanished.
