Are you for or against Data Centers?

Who here knows what a "catch-all" phrase like data centers means.

If they suck power, make 'em include a power plant, perhaps even one which includes renewable/solar power, in the plan.

If they use too much water. make 'em include a complete, sealed water system.

Also, don't fear building them WAY out of town. I hear they're ugly.

Not in general, however.

Using public utilities to power them like electricity and water - yes. If they want there datacenters they should build there own infrastructure. And not just the pipe to the street.

As you mentioned also there an industrial enterprise - they should be built in properly zoned industrial parks. You don't find stamping houses next to residential subdivisions.

No problem with them. It's just a building. Where I live we have buildings from GM, Amazon, Meijer warehouses even a new LG battery plant. They don't bother anyone. They don't pollute. They don't yell get of my lawn when I drive by. My opinion? People just need to be offended by something these days and they don't feel whole unless others see them as a victim.

Flame suit on! 🔥

They don't bother anyone or pollute? That is literally all they do!

Unfortunately in this data age they are a necessary evil. Unless you want to take computing back twenty years.
Yes please.

How do they pollute? It's just a bunch of electronics, cooling towers and electricity. The only type of plant that I wouldn't like right next to a neighborhood would be a metal stamping plant but even then modern presses are super quiet and low vibration.

With the building explosion of data centers are you for or against them?

I am against them. They are noisy, use lots of water and too much power.

I am also afraid of the A.I that comes with it.

Your thoughts?

I don't have a problem with them per se. The problem is where the county allows them to be built, light pollution, and whether residents are subsidizing the power consumption/infrastructure build out.
I would think their power consumption would stabilize rates since there would be consistent demand.

The centers themselves are not job creators other than from the construction.

AI is of course a concern for obvious reasons.

Their power demand increases GHG emissions from the power generator. AI companies are aware of this so they're looking to take advantage of nuclear when possible.

Well... My thoughts are somehow I don't think all this A.I. will end well for us humans so IMO data centers can't be good but IF we don't do it China will so do I want not good for us USA data Centers or not good for us China Data centers?

I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t want to go back in time 30 years. All info stored on paper, sending everything by snail mail, having to drive down to the bank, store, etc to do or get anything, only being able to communicate remotely to people via phone when they were home because everything was on landline, no streaming movies, shows, music. Yeah no thanks. I like this much better. Now I'll get off your lawn.

Make them pay their way. If you want to make a two minute AI video then you should pay for the cost of producing it and the data center would have to use that money to offset the impact they have in their location when it comes to the electric, water and such.

I love that people are for them as long as they are in someone else’s backyard.
There is a place for things. I'm sure you love oil and gas, but likely don't want a refinery next door. I think a data center wouldn't be any more imposing than a large warehouse. So it can go in an industrial area of town.

I'm not for or against it; it's normal industry imo.

What I don't like is the sudden explosion of building them anywhere and everywhere. Here there has been some imminent domain where the town/city will stop services to claim subdivision land for data centers.
