As long as you stay in the appropriate lane to do "your thing." I don't think it should be a problem. Progressively faster drivers should be in lanes to the left. If you want to do this coasting, within reason, stay in the middle or right lane. There is nothing we can do to control the wonderfully considerate folks who use the left lane as their personal space, regardless of their differential speed.
Here is something to look for. Just because I have a large gap in front of me relative to the car ahead DOES NOT mean I am driving slower than that car. If traffic is moving at 60 and I am going 40 then, by all means, pass me, honk at me, whatever.
Have you ever stopped to think that if everybody left the proper gaps and matched speed with traffic everything would flow pretty smoothly and we wouldn't have this constant "rubber band" effect.
That is why the time has come to take the individual decisions out of the mix. People are simply incapable of applying logic to a situation that is ripe for such application.
If traffic is moving at 50, with stop-and-go being caused by the illogical drivers, then how the heck do you get off thinking that you are so special that you deserve to be able to drive 70? There is something wrong with that picture. The vast majority of traffic jam ups I see are cause by tailgating and failure to maintain lane discipline, and failure to keep the right lane clear while approaching entrance ramps where you can clearly see a line of bozos entering the highway at 40 mph. Then, all of those bozos cut into the middle lane at 40 causing the tailgaters in that lane to slam on their brakes. Then, some of those bozos jump into the left lane at 40 causing that lane to come to a jerky stop.
Also, how much trouble is it to look behind you and to the left before moving left to pass. If you see a car in the left lane coming up fast why the heck would you just not wait until they pass before moving to the left at a slower speed? Is it a major hardship to wait those few seconds for the lane to be clear. Again, I guess you are so special that you should be able to pass anyone you like whenever you like.
There will be NO improvements in traffic flow until driving skills and thought processes improve. Since we all know that ain't gonna happen I say to you now that commuting by car will eventually have to die unless we automate. Or, you can plan to keep a tiny apartment near your workplace and spend the week there, only going home on weekends. That's what they do in some of the big cities in Japan. People are just as stupid at driving there.
