Now that I have a new phone, looking for some premium protection for it.

Are the Otterbox products really that good?

I do realize that an Otterbox cover will probably last as long as the phone does. And that is attractive right there.

Just looking for experience from others.... are their products good... or it is a lot of hype?

Looking at the "Commuter" cover for my Razr M.

IME, the Otterboxes are excellent. The only issue I have woth them is that they are big and clunky. I tried a Body Glove case on my old htc Evo, and it was worthless. When I dropped the phone, it shattered.

I'm currently using a leather folio-type cover on my Samsung Note, though, because I wanted something that would cover the screen.

I like the griffin survivor series. Cheaper than an otterbox and has be submerged a few times and my phone has always been dry.

I wanted to get a Griffin Survivor for my iPhone 5, but they had none available.

So I got an Otterbox.

I find it to be good quality and has protected it well when I dropped it getting out of the car last week.

The only thing that annoys, which I believe also applies to the Griffin, is the openings for the camera and earphone as they let in dust and dirt.

So you have to take it apart every week or so to give it a clean otherwise I think the screen will get scratched.

I would not hesitate in buying another one.

I have an Otterbox for my Droid 2. The top section broke and they replaced it at no cost. Hard to figure out how anyone could make a great cover when the top slides for the keyboard.

I have had an Otterbox on my phone since the day I got it.

My Otterbox is soo good that my phone survived being dropped int he toilet, WHEN ON, for ~6 seconds.

Otterbox is THE TRUTH.

*Hard case, over soft skin case.

My 18 year old son says the otterbox is the truth, he has managed to keep his i4 intact for two years, thats with multiple drops to the floor.

Buy Otterbox because you drop or break things a lot, not because they're slim or stylish.

I never understood the appeal. It turns a slim and light iPhone into a brick.

I have an Otterbox Defender on my iPhail 4S. The little flap for the charger port broke off and the silicone portion around the screen is splitting, I started using it late March / early April. Now the one thing I don't use is the belt clip. I keep the phone in my pocket so it is in and out multiple times a day. But it has saved the phone many times.

I've had iPhones since the 3G first came out. Dropped them, stepped on them, use them on boat trips, etc.

I only broke glass on my 3GS, never any others. All work perfect when I trade up.

I keep a thin leather sleeve for mine, doesn't add even 2mm to it. Slim and perfect.

I prefer a bare phone and it has worked fine. I can't justify adding bulk to a phone. Makes it inconvenient to me.

I use the Commuter on my S3, and my wife uses one on her iPhone 5. They are great and have saved our phones on drops a number of times. I highly recommend them.

Now... the question is... black Otterbox or Grey Otterbox?

I'm leaning towards grey, as that should make the phone easier to spot when it has been misplaced.

Exactly.

I can't imagine having something encased in a Defender in my pocket. I also find the outer shells on some of their designs really slippery, such as the Commuter on my old phone. I also didn't like how loose the soft part of the case was because the edges would lift and the phone would get scratched by my keys.

I have a thin TPU case on my phone and I've dropped it while on an elliptical and several times onto the floor and it's still fine.

Buy them on ebay -- they are much cheaper. I bought my first iphone Otterbox on ebay for $20ish. A few months later the white rubber portion started turning yellow. It kept getting worse, and bleach wouldn't clean it completely. I contacted Otterbox via their website. I told them I bought new on ebay (probably wasn't even an "authorized" dealer). There were no questions asked. They let me pick a new one of my choice, and they shipped it free. I didn't have to ship the old one back, provide any proof, etc. Lesson learned: "Otterbox Customer Service is top notch", and "avoid light colors".

I got a $5 3 piece iPhone case that seems to protect as well as Otter from ebay

It adds protection, a stand and holster
