Are highmilage oils really needed?

Nothing beyond bottom-of-the-barrel dino is NEEDED. It depends on your needs. High mileage oils seem to be decent at reconditioning seals, and reducing oil consumption somewhat. So if your car burns a bit of oil, or leaks, you might try a HM Oil. Maxlife syn blend has been a good oil for me, but I'm switching to PP 5W-30 come next OCI, to give it a try. If your car burns a ton of oil, I would stay away from synthetic, and just run a cheap dino, otherwise you will be wasting alot of money on expensive synthetic which is being burned up. If you aren't burning a ton you could give Valvoline Maxlife a try, or Pennzoil Platinum perhaps. I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me could help you better than I can.

HM oils may be useful if you encounter seal or consumption issues.

I don't know if I can say this well. If an engine was maintained in a common consumer manner, it may benefit from an HM oil as its age advances and those issues come to bear. I think that this is becoming less of an issue as we move forward.

That won't apply to every situation.

Basically a properly maintained engine should not have those issues to cope with over 100k (or more)..assuming the 100k isn't over some double decade time span.

I agreed.

My 1994 Lexus LS400 with over 240k miles consumes about 1/2 quarts every 3-4k miles since new with all brand names dino and syn, but it never had any HM oil.

My other car over 100k miles is 2000 MB E430, it has 106k miles now and never consumes any measurable oil between OCI's of around 10-13k miles. It had M1 0W40 the first 8 years/90k miles and it has M1 0W20 now without oil consumption at all.

I don't plan to use HM oil in either car, unless it is on sale for cheap.

There's no "need" to run HM oil necessarily due to mileage. They do have some nice benefits, like helping to stop small leaks and I also like a slightly heavier 5W-30 in my rig(s) for summers. But more often that not, I don't use them and think some might be better off with a good high-calcium synthetic like Pennzoil Platinum/Quaker State syn...
