Are Chinese tires really that bad?

The old Prius needs new shoes within a year - I’m looking at Falken, Yokohama, General and maybe Hankook or Kumho - Michelin is getting rid of 15” sizes. But, the mom and pops and increasingly America’s Tire are pushing Chinesium tires as a budget buy or when a tier 1/2 brand isn’t available. They aren’t my first pick and I’ve heard of two stories involving LingLongs. I know Milestar is the better of the Chinesium, truckers seem to like Doublecoin. I see a lot of Chinesium - especially on older luxury cars, newer cars and fleet trucks. Are they really that bad besides shorter life and poorer wet traction?

Keep your eye out for rebates and specials. I got $350.00 off Continental tires last year buying when there was a rebate and using their credit card. You have time on your side at this point.

might be ok.. we talking liangdongfen brand or radar, westlake, milestar?
or post up a size and I'll go deal search.

Of course in a prius if you buy the wrong tires the 20$ a tire in savings will go into the gas tank fast when you lose 10-15% fuel economy.
for 185/65r15
the cheapest I'd go is solar 4xs at walmart for $47
probably dont need to spend 160$ each on michelin defenders.
but they also have
pirellis at 85
mastercraft at 61
yokohamas at 73
kumho ta11 62
starfire at 63

so No I probably would avoid chinese branded tires for something else.

I don't think we should still label them as Chinese tyres, implying they're all equally bad. My car comes with Maxxis tyres, and so far they are miles better than the Hankook ventus prime 2 that came on the Hyundai i40. Those lacked grip in the wet, the Maxxis don't.

Maxxis makes good tires...

I’m looking at 185/65R15 or 195/60R15. Conti, Pirelli, Yokohama, Falken, Sumitomo and the Koreans all have that size. Debating the 195s for a bit wider of a tire to improve handling.

Tires on the Caprice were made in Thailand. Sentury. I like them better than the Goodyear RS-As that were on it when I got it. They have been good for what they are, I don't think they will last more than 30,000 miles though.

My biggest concern with Asian tires is the U.S. being overly dependent on them. There could be a Taiwan/Chinese conflict that could cripple the supply of new tires. I have Chinese made GT Radial SportActive 2 tires on my VW that are really good.
